Develop practical mapping and spatial data skills for ecology, conservation, and environmental projects.

This introductory online course is suitable for learners starting with GIS, as well as ArcGIS users interested in moving to QGIS, a free, open-source platform.

Through recorded lectures and hands-on activities, you’ll learn to:

  • Work with vector and raster data.
  • Understand coordinate systems and map projections.
  • Create and edit spatial data.
  • Query tables and explore spatial relationships.
  • Design clear maps for reports and communication.

These transferable skills can support work with species records, habitat information, and other environmental datasets, making the course relevant to ecological consultancy, conservation organisations, and research.

No previous GIS experience is required.

Study online from the UK, at your own pace. The spring offering is available in the Basic self-study format.

Instructor: Dr Kathleen Dunckel.

Visit the course page for full details, tuition, and registration.

Early bird ends 20 December 2026.
