Environmental Technician

Do you have experience managing and maintaining water quality monitors and an interest in the environment? Do you have experience investigating complex water quality problems? Would you like to work across the region surveying, installing and maintaining riverside water quality monitoring sites? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Smart Rivers team as an Environmental Technician.
What you'll do
Reporting to the Senior Environmental Technician in the Smart Rivers team, you will support the delivery of an exciting new programme that requires the installation of circa 2000 continuous water quality monitoring (CWQM) sites across our region.
Working with geospatial tools you will identify suitable sites for CWQM installations. You will identify and contact landowners and relevant stakeholders to arrange access and complete site surveys. You will locate, design and specify CWQM sites; working closely with our Ecology, Planning, Estates, GIS and Construction teams, as well as external stakeholders to provide technical expertise on the installation and ongoing maintenance.
You will:
- help to source and deploy CWQM equipment while being responsible for maintaining the equipment in the field, which will include calibrating scientific equipment in a lab environment
- produce drawings and technical reports to support the planning and permits required for the CWQM installations, using your knowledge and collected data to develop GIS data sets and build a picture of catchment water quality
- assist with water quality surveys using our remote-controlled 'surfboard' and interpret the data to understand optimal monitor placement.
- use your investigation skills to help answer questions about the data being received by the CWQM sites
- assist our operational and catchment teams in investigating potential pollutions and collecting and reporting data that will assist in making effective decisions that lead to positive environmental and stakeholder outcomes
- help identify and develop creative ways to automate or improve efficiency.
The role will require engagement with other departments to ensure we identify and maximise potential synergies with existing projects and the available data sources. This will mostly be a field-based role with one to two days of office/home-based work each week.
What you'll need
- Experience using ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey 123, but not essential.
- Experience measuring water quality.
- Experience calibrating scientific equipment. This is not essential but you need to be technology savvy.
- Experience collecting and reporting large environmental data sets.
- Knowledge of how sewerage networks and water recycling centres operate.
- The ability to plan your workload and work efficiently alone and as part of the Smart Rivers team.
- A full driving licence.
- The ability to swim.
- Enthusiasm and an interest in helping to improve the water quality of our rivers and seas
- Good data management, listening and interpretation skills with an appreciation of technical objectives.
- The ability to communicate technical information to all levels.
- Proficiency in a range of Microsoft packages.
- An understanding of environmental issues relating to the abstraction and discharge of water and water pollution, but this is not essential.
- An understanding of conservation and other environmental legislation, but this is not essential.
- A basic understanding of catchment hydrology or integrated water/catchment management.
Interviews for this role will be conducted end of November.
