About Us:

We are a global ocean conservation charity dedicated to preserving the ocean for future generations. Through grant-giving and strategic collaborations, we aim to protect marine ecosystems and inspire collective action worldwide. We’re looking for a passionate and strategic Communication and Marketing Manager to lead our communications efforts, raise awareness about our mission, and engage key stakeholders in impactful ways.

We believe everyone can play a role in preserving the beauty and abundance of our oceans.

In 2024, we started a partnership with Fish Free February (FFF), a UK charity that aims to inspire individuals and organisations to reduce seafood consumption, embrace more sustainable seafood practices, promote a healthier planet, and spread awareness of the fishing industry's impact on the ocean.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a creative and passionate freelance Marketing and Communications Manager to join our team. This role will focus on developing and executing marketing strategies for both 71blue and our collaboration with Fish Free February. You will play a key role in enhancing both organisations visibility, engaging our audiences, and driving participation in our initiatives.

This role will work closely with 71blue Fundraising Manager and Executive Director to enhance our brand visibility, engage donors and stakeholders, and promote the impact of our grant-making efforts. This person will also work closely with the Fish Free February team to build and implement the campaign strategy, seek funding opportunities and plan the growth of FFF in the upcoming year.

The ideal candidate will have a flexible approach and a can-do attitude, a strong background in digital marketing, content creation, media relations, and brand management, with a passion for ocean conservation and environmental advocacy. Good knowledge of marine issues, particularly those associated with fishing, is also essential.

Qualifications:

  • Ideally looking for someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field. However, we will consider applicants without this qualification if they have significant relevant work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in communications, digital marketing, or public relations, ideally within the non-profit or environmental sector.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing communication strategies that increase awareness and engagement.
  • A creative eye for producing inspiring media content. Strong writing and storytelling skills, with experience creating engaging content for various audiences.
  • A broad understanding of the conservation issues that 71blue and Fish Free February are working to tackle and an appetite to continue learning. Skilled at conveying and translating sometimes complex scientific concepts to a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience with digital marketing tools (e.g., Google Analytics, social media platforms, email marketing tools).
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with media outlets and key stakeholders.
  • Highly organised and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for ocean conservation or environmental advocacy is a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities:

For 71blue:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication and marketing strategy that aligns with the organisation’s mission, increasing brand awareness and engagement with target audiences (donors, grantees, partners, and the public).
  • Create engaging content for social media, newsletters, and other digital platforms (press releases, newsletters, social media posts, reports, etc.) to raise awareness, encourage participation and to highlight the impact of our programs and grants.
  • Collaborate with our team to design campaigns that resonate with our target audiences and align with our mission.
  • Manage digital marketing efforts, including social media, email campaigns, and advertising to grow audience engagement and donations.
  • Cultivate media relationships, securing coverage for our events, initiatives, and success stories.
  • Collaborate with the Fundraising Manager to support fundraising campaigns with targeted marketing and communication strategies.
  • Ensure consistency in brand messaging across all platforms, maintaining a cohesive identity.
  • Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of marketing efforts, report on KPIs, analyzing data to continuously improve outreach efforts.
  • Plan and promote organizational events, both in-person and virtual, to engage with donors, partners, and the broader community.
  • Build relationships with partners, stakeholders, and influencers to amplify our message and reach.

For Fish Free February:

  • Strategy Development: Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communication strategies for Fish Free February campaign.
  • Campaign Management: Lead the Fish Free February Campaign by developing engaging content, recruiting and managing volunteers, and driving participation.
  • Community Engagement: Connect people with chefs, influencers, restaurants, and businesses that provide inspiring plant-based products, recipes, and services.
  • Education and Outreach: Create educational presentations and activities for schools and communities to raise awareness about sustainable seafood practices.
  • Media Relations: Write and submit articles and blogs while collaborating with journalists to enhance visibility.
  • Research and Content Creation: Research good news stories and facts related to fisheries, disseminate complex scientific information, and create engaging social media content.
  • Fundraising: Seek new opportunities to raise funds for Fish Free February through grants, corporate sponsorship and major donors. (Guidance and training in this area will be provided by FFF).
