Conservation & Wildlife

The Fair Isle Bird Observatory (FIBO) is an independent, non-profit-making charity which provides hotel accommodation for visitors to the remote Scottish island of Fair Isle in addition to carrying out ornithological studies and research.

The brand-new 40-bed hotel is the island’s primary accommodation for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and island tourists between early April and the end of October. The Hospitality Manager (HM) will oversee all matters relating to visitors and accommodation and will manage a seasonally employed team comprising of a cook, assistant cook and general hospitality assistants. The kitchen provides three meals a day for visitors. The post is complemented by a Head of Ornithology (HO) who will liaise with and support the HM. There is the opportunity for a joint HM/HO appointment with spouses/partners working in the two roles.

The HM will be resident on the island in self-contained accommodation, suitable for a small family, attached to the hotel. Benefits include accommodation, food and utilities.

This is a challenging and responsible post requiring considerable initiative, dedication and autonomy to assist in the continuing development of a world-famous visitor facility. The successful applicant will require to have hospitality, business administration or similar qualification or equivalent experience.

Further information is available on our website.

The deadline for applications is 11th December 2024. We regret that we will be unable to give feedback on unsuccessful applications.

Background

Fair Isle is a small remote island lying between Orkney and mainland Shetland famed for its spectacular scenery, internationally important ornithological work and a thriving centre for local arts and crafts. There is a vibrant local community of around 55 residents and the island has a primary school, shop, resident nurse and is served by regular transport links.

This is a rare opportunity to live and work on Fair Isle in a setting of outstanding natural beauty.
