About us
As the leading trade association for energy users, ADE: Demand represent over 150 interested parties from across the energy sector. Decarbonisation of buildings, transport and industry is increasing and long-term, the fundamentals are strong. However, it remains the case that business cases for decarbonisation and providing flexibility are too difficult, uptake rates are too slow and generation and storage still dominant thinking in the major energy debates of our day: in the role of market signals, centralised planning, connections reform. Furthermore, the prevailing view of the role demand will play in the energy system remains wedded to its historical, high-carbon, passive role in the system. A new vision is needed.
Our vision, and what ADE: Demand exists to make happen, is no less than a complete re-imagining of the role of demand in our energy system so that:
- Demand is given equal consideration to generation
- Every household, commercial business and industrial site has a commercially viable path to decarbonisation
- It is recognised that energy users and their assets have a day job – they shouldn’t have to work around the energy system, the energy system should work around them
- Millions of users with automated energy provision can play a major part in keeping the lights on.
About the role
ADE: Demand is recruiting for a Policy Officer or Manager (maternity cover), with a specialist focus on industrial and non-domestic energy. Industrial decarbonisation is one of the most challenging and exciting areas of the UK’s efforts to address climate change. You will work across the UK’s pioneering efforts to create a new hydrogen network system for industrial clusters, pushing for greater clarity and ambition for industrial sites dispersed outside of those clusters and for a continued focus on industrial energy efficiency through technologies such as Combined Heat and Power.
With a focus on industrial energy, you will work with industrial companies, Government and others to secure meaningful changes in policy and regulation that support decarbonisation of British industry.
As part of the broader policy team and the wider ADE: Demand team, you will work on diverse projects including original research to support our policy positions and supporting our political and press engagement.
Responsibilities
- Driving forward our strategic priorities for industrial energy, including through report and position paper writing, managing stakeholder relationships and running workshops, collaborating with other similarly situated organisations
- Developing and maintaining expertise in industrial energy and the activities of ADE: Demand’s industrial membership
- Drafting briefings and consultations
- Managing our Industrial Forum, working closely with the Industrial Forum Chair
- Managing projects with multiple stakeholders
- Developing and maintaining relationships across Government and other key stakeholders
- Communicating our work and the interests of our members confidently in public forums and in private meetings with Government and others
- Supporting the broader work of ADE: Demand and in particular, press and parliamentary work and work with potential members

- Good academic qualifications or substantial work experience in the field;
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills and ability to communicate to a wide variety of audiences; and
- Ability to work well, and independently, in a small team environment.

- Knowledge of industrial policy, energy policy, or both;
- Experience of working in a public policy environment.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Friday 18th July.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews during the weeks of 21 July - 1 August.
You will be asked to complete a short exercise ahead of or after the interview. Details will be provided in due course.
