Ecology Technician
Powys County Council
About the Role
As an Ecology Technician with Powys County Council’s Highways, Transport & Recycling Service, you’ll be at the forefront of protecting and enhancing biodiversity across the county. This is a hands-on, purpose-driven role where your ecological expertise will directly influence how we plan, design, and deliver infrastructure and services.
Working closely with our Ecology Team, you’ll help ensure that ecological considerations are not just an afterthought—but a core part of how we operate. From conducting assessments to supporting mitigation strategies, your work will help Powys meet its environmental responsibilities and unlock opportunities to create richer, more resilient habitats across our landscapes.
About you:
You’ve a passion for nature and a drive to make a difference. Whether you're surveying habitats, advising on planning applications, or guiding teams on biodiversity best practices, you bring both expertise and enthusiasm to the table.
You thrive outdoors in all weathers, are confident working independently or as part of a team, and communicate clearly with colleagues, contractors, and the public alike. You’re proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to continuous learning.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has hands-on experience with ecological fieldwork, including protected species and habitat surveys
- Has awareness of UK ecological legislation, biodiversity policy, and mitigation strategies
- Is comfortable navigating varied terrain and working in challenging outdoor conditions
- Can confidently manage their own workload and contribute to collaborative projects
- Ideally holds a degree in ecology or a related subject
- Holds or is eligible for protected species survey licences
What you will do:
As an Ecology Technician, your days will be varied, rewarding, and full of purpose. You’ll be a key player in ensuring that Powys County Council’s projects are not only compliant with ecological legislation—but also actively contribute to a greener, more biodiverse future.
Here’s what you’ll get involved in:
- Surveying and Assessing: Carry out ecological fieldwork, including habitat and protected species surveys, and provide expert advice on biodiversity to internal teams and partners.
- On-Site Supervision: Act as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW), ensuring construction and maintenance activities follow ecological best practices and legal requirements.
- Planning Support: Contribute to planning applications, environmental statements, and land use proposals with clear, evidence-based ecological input.
- Policy and Strategy: Help shape local planning policies and biodiversity strategies, including input into Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) and Development Plans.
- Licensing and Compliance: Assist in securing protected species licences and statutory consents for council-led projects.
- Training and Mentoring: Share your knowledge by delivering training and guidance to colleagues on ecological compliance and biodiversity goals.
- Collaboration and Engagement: Work with conservation organisations, wildlife trusts, and the public to promote ecological awareness and respond to enquiries.
- Leadership Support: Step in to support or represent the Senior Ecologist / Ecologist when needed.
