We are seeking a team player with excellent attention to detail and computer skills to assist with management and analysis of long-term GWCT databases and spatially enabled datasets (Partridge Count Scheme, in particular). The role will also involve undertaking and assisting with GIS/Biometrics contracts and projects.

The successful applicant may be expected to work with key partners which include:

  1. Farmers, landowners, gamekeepers, and fishermen
  2. BASC, CA, NGO, and other game-focused organisations
  3. NFU, FUW, NCA, and farming-focused organisations
  4. Conservation charities

Our vision

To improve involvement of stakeholders with our long-term datasets (Partridge Count Scheme, in
particular) and provide pertinent information back to these stakeholders to improve their ability
to manage the countryside for biodiversity. To ensure that data from these long-term datasets can
provide support to practitioner data collection projects across the GWCT. To support senior
scientists with GIS and data handling to help increase the publication rate of scientific papers.

We are seeking a team player with excellent attention to detail and computer skills to assist with management and analysis of long-term GWCT databases and spatially enabled datasets (Partridge Count Scheme, in particular). The role will also involve undertaking and assisting with GIS/Biometrics contracts and projects.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  1. Partridge Count Scheme coordination: data collection, entry, and extraction; statistical analysis; assistance with report/paper writing.
  2. Assistance with producing, publishing, and maintaining Partridge Count Scheme newsletter and website material.
  3. Collecting and processing GIS data collected with drones.
  4. GIS and R support for other GWCT departments as appropriate.
  5. Assistance with the supervision of undergraduate GIS placement students.
  6. Assistance with report/paper writing for Biometrics/GIS contracts.
  7. Attendance of internal/external meetings as required.

Person Specification

  1. Competence in using QGIS and R. (Essential)
  2. Knowledge of agroecology, including an understanding of the issues that affect ground nesting birds, particularly grey partridge. (Essential)
  3. Excellent computer skills, including MS Office. Extensive knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, MS Teams. (Essential)
  4. Experience in data entry and data management.  (Essential)
  5. Experience of databases, e.g. SQL. (Essential)
  6. Experience of report writing.  (Essential)
  7. A team player; approachable, flexible, enthusiastic and welcoming to all. (Essential)
  8. An interest in writing scientific papers. (Preferable)
  9. Experience in the use of drones to collect ecological data. (Preferable)
  10. A broad interest in wildlife, land management and the farmed environment. (Desirable)
