Petersfield Ranger – A Unique Opportunity to Work in the Heart of the South Downs

Salary: £31,537 to £34,434 per annum (NJC SCP 18 – 23) depending on experience, plus membership of Local Government Pension Scheme
Hours: 37 hours per week
Post: Permanent

Petersfield Town Council is excited to offer a newly created opportunity for an experienced Ranger to join our team and make a meaningful impact on the natural landscape in and around the historic market town of Petersfield, Hampshire.

Nestled within the South Downs National Park, Petersfield is surrounded by a diverse and ecologically rich countryside—ranging from heathlands and wildflower meadows to woodlands, streams and ponds. This Petersfield based role offers a chance to work in one of the most scenic and biodiverse areas in southern England, playing a vital role in conserving and enhancing it for generations to come.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated professional to plan, organise and deliver projects and activities that achieve multiple goals across nature recovery, access for all and climate adaptation. A strong team working ethic along with well-developed negotiating and interpersonal skills are also essential to ensure you can work effectively with colleagues, partners and local communities to deliver the Council’s objectives.

You’ll be involved in a wide range of countryside management tasks, including the strategic development and delivery of the Council’s Management Plans and open spaces, as well as developing projects around landscape, biodiversity, countryside recreation and community involvement.

Supported by the South Downs National Park Authority, this role uniquely involves close collaboration and integration with their local Ranger team, offering you the chance to be part of a wider network of countryside professionals, whilst enabling independent professional development.

What you'll need:

  • A degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent qualification in countryside or rural management.
  • Proven experience in countryside management, with knowledge of habitat types including grasslands, woodlands, heaths, streams and ponds.
  • The ability to plan, manage and deliver practical projects with a focus on multiple outcomes.
  • Strong team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills to engage effectively with colleagues, partners and the local community.

Think this sounds like you?

If you're passionate about nature, committed to making a real difference and excited by the idea of working in a stunning and diverse natural setting, where the landscape is as rewarding as the work itself - we’d love to hear from you!

Interviews will take place on 27th August 2025.
