About the Role
We’re looking for experienced and motivated environmental professionals to join our Installations Regulatory Team in the Hertfordshire and North London area.
As a Regulatory Officer, you will be at the forefront of protecting communities and the environment from harm. You’ll regulate a wide variety of permitted waste and industrial installations, ensuring businesses comply with environmental permits and legislation. Your work will help contribute to a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out compliance assessments at a range of industrial and waste recycling sites
- Ensuring operators meet permit conditions and can effectively protect the environment.
- Investigating incidents and taking enforcement action where necessary.
- Assessing complex information to make informed decisions about site operations
- Setting permit conditions that ensure sustainable, compliant operations.
- Using your influencing and negotiation skills to encourage best practice, often working with senior individuals in industry, local communities, and other stakeholders.
You will receive full training to equip you with the skills needed for this role.
About the Team
The Installations team sits within the Environment Management department for Hertfordshire and North London. We regulate a diverse range of industrial sectors including:
- Landfill
- Chemicals
- Hazardous waste treatment
- Incineration
- Combustion
- Biowaste treatment
- Food & drink manufacturing
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for individuals with a background in the waste or industrial sectors and strong regulatory understanding. The ideal candidate will have:
- A full UK driving licence is required for the role.
- Ideally, a degree or equivalent experience in a scientific, environmental, or engineering discipline.
- Strong technical knowledge and analytical thinking.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to apply the principles of better regulation in complex, evolving situations.
- Confidence in influencing behaviour and securing positive environmental outcomes.
- Flexibility to travel for operational site visits – (this will involve being within 2 hours of travel distance from Welwyn Garden City.
Following training, you will be expected to take on an incident management role, which may include occasional out-of-hours standby duties. A pool/hire vehicle will be available for business travel.
Incident Response Commitment
All Environment Agency employees take part in our incident response rota. This is a key part of our role in protecting people and the environment. You’ll receive full support and training to help you carry out this duty in a way that’s manageable and rewarding. More information is available in the candidate pack.
