We’re looking for a dynamic and passionate Welsh Marine Policy Officer to lead our policy and advocacy engagement with the recreational fishing sector in Wales.

This role is pivotal in engaging with recreational sea angler in Wales, giving the sector a voice in decision-making and advocating for sustainable and equitable fisheries.

You’ll report to our Head of Marine and work closely with colleagues across all areas of Angling Trust and Fish Legal. You will be joining a motivated team working to protect, promote and develop angling. The role is funded by the Waterloo Foundation and will be monitored against defined deliverables.

This is a full-time role for three-years that suits an individual passionate about driving change and recognition for recreational sea fishing in Wales and toward sustainable fisheries more broadly by working alongside dedicated and supportive teams within a flexible and family-friendly organisation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Policy and Advocacy: Represent recreational anglers in Welsh Government processes; develop consultation responses; advocate for fair resource allocation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build relationships with clubs, skippers, NGOs, government and academia; host regional workshops; grow the Welsh voice within the Angling Trust’s Marine Regional Network.
  • Evidence and Research: Support and commission studies on recreational fishing’s value; contribute data and case studies to Fisheries Management Plans.
  • Partnership Development: Collaborate with partners including Natural Resources Wales, Cefas, universities, and conservation NGOs.
  • Outreach and Communication: Produce bilingual materials, digital content and updates; support participation in citizen science programmes like the Sea Angling Diary.

Who you are

  • Good understanding of marine and fisheries policy in Wales or the UK
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and advocacy
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

What will make you stand out

  • Passionate about recreational sea fishing and developing a vibrant, sustainable sector
  • Bilingual in Welsh and English (or willingness to develop Welsh language skills)
  • Background in environmental policy, marine science, or coastal communities

What’s in it for you

  • Salary of £28k to £30k per annum, dependent on experience
  • Remote role with regular travel around Wales (occasional overnight stays, as required)
  • Flexible working across 5 days (37.5 hours) per week (some evening or weekend work, as required)
  • 25 days holiday (plus public holidays)
  • Laptop and telephone as well as any mileage, expenses, and TOIL

Who we are

The Angling Trust is a membership-based organisation operating in England and Wales representing recreational fishing – one of the country’s largest participation sports. We are a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to protect, promote, and develop our wonderful sport—we care deeply about the environments in which we fish and are committed to creating opportunities for all within society to experience fishing in a healthy aquatic world.

We collaborate with Fish Legal, a separate membership association that uses the law to protect the rights of its members throughout the UK whilst fighting pollution and damage or other threats to the water environment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team dedicated to fighting for the future of fish and fishing.

From standing up for anglers’ rights to campaigning for a healthier environment, we put your interests and those of our beloved sport at the heart of everything we do—salty or fresh, we are championing the protection of our waterways.

Want to join us?

We believe a diversity of backgrounds, experience, and opinions builds the strongest team, so we encourage those from under-represented groups to apply—we are members of the Sporting Equals Charter and we’re actively participating in the Sport England sponsored Inclusive Employers development programme.
