We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to plan and deliver the reserve management plan. You’ll be part of a team responsible for the effective day to day running of the reserve including estate and building infrastructure, grazing and farmland management, species and habitat monitoring, forestry, deer impact and lease management, habitat management, volunteer management and working holidays, machinery maintenance, health & safety and the environment, delivering medium projects and overseeing visitor services.  This post is for someone who enjoys working outside in all conditions, within a wonderful team of volunteers and staff, located in a remote and beautiful Highland community.

The nature reserve lies in the heart of the Flow Country, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of international importance.  An area of expansive, dramatic and inspiring blanket bog set in Sutherland and Caithness in the far north of Scotland. The reserve is important for its size and the scale at which we work, the wildlife that calls it home and the role it plays in carbon storage. The recent inscription of the Flow Country as the world’s first peatland UNESCO World Heritage site exemplifies the global value of this landscape. 

Essential skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • Land management and ecological knowledge and experience, knowledge of land management obligations and compliance requirements (e.g. agricultural and environmental legislation)
  • Knowledge of health, safety and environment applying to site management (e.g. emergency plans & risk assessments)
  • Individual and team management skills; experience of working with contractors and projects and with a diverse team of staff or volunteers
  • Biological monitoring experience, record keeping and data management, IT skills (e.g. M365) and database experience (e.g. GIS)
  • Estate management skills and experience; machinery operations, equipment servicing experience. (e.g. qualifications & experience in using equipment such as chainsaw, clearing saw and tractor)
  • Organisational skills including time management, prioritisation and problem solving

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • Experience of compliance requirements (e.g. agricultural and environmental legislation), agriculture & livestock grazing for conservation.
  • Experience of working with graziers.
  • Experience of working with visitors and interpretation skills.

Additional information:

  • This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations.
  • This role will require occasional weekend, early morning and evening working so will need someone who is able to be flexible.
  • The role holder will require a full, manual driving licence that is valid in the UK as they'll be driving a 4x4 into remote locations.

This is a Permanent role for 37.5 hours per week.
