We are recruiting for two Climate and Sustainability Support Officers to join the Climate Emergency Team within the overarching Environment Service based in Dumfries and Galloway. We are a small, friendly and enthusiastic team and look to recruit one permanent post and one fixed term post (2 years fixed term).

The role is to support the development and co-ordination of policies, activities and projects to achieve the commitments, behavioural change and development of themes to support Dumfries and Galloway to achieve regional net zero.

The main duties are to support the development and co-ordination of activities, policies and projects/programmes across all Council services to address climate change.

Support the review of all policy and practice across Council services to identify ways to move further and faster on carbon reduction measures.

Support engagement and development with internal and external stakeholders across the sectors to promote the Council and Regional climate change commitments.

We would welcome applications from those who have experience, skills and knowledge in the following areas:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • Educated to SCQF Level 8 (e.g. HND / SVQ Level 4) or equivalent in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification and experience.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.

Requirements

EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable experience in 2 of the following five areas:
    • 1. Service, program and project development and delivery including experience of financial control, monitoring and evaluation processes.
    • 2. Creating and delivering innovative programs and projects.
    • 3. Developing and influencing policy, targets, strategy and processes to achieve outcomes.
    • 4. Developing and sustaining effective partnerships – at national and/or local level, with public, private and/or community and voluntary sectors.
    • 5. Co-ordinating the gathering of information, monitoring, analysis, reporting and reviewing of key issues opportunities, risks and performance.
  • Proven track record of designing, co-ordinating and delivering high quality policies / strategies, programs and/or projects.
  • Working with minimal direction using own initiative.
  • Securing funding and resources to achieve agreed outcomes.
  • Planning delivering and continually improving services to understand and meet customer needs.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The ability to organise and prioritise own work flexibly to meet changing demands.
  • Able to monitor, interpret, manage and present financial and statistical data.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people and organisations.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the use of information and communication technology.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Specialist knowledge in either Sustainable Development and/or Climate Change.
  • An understanding of spreadsheets, Word Processing and Database systems.

PERSONALITY FACTORS

  • You will have Political sensitivity.
  • The ability to work as part of a busy team and as a team player.
  • Comfortable and able to use your own initiative.
  • Be ability to work under pressure and complete deadlines.
  • Be a good communicator who is reliable, professional and have a positive approach whilst delivering an accurate, organised and methodical work ethic.
  • You will display confidence in your own judgement but respond constructively to alternative ideas.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

As the duties of this role require you to effectively travel and attend meetings at Council locations across the region to successfully undertake the full remit of the role, you must hold a current driving licence.

You must work well both independently and as part of a team.

A will have a flexible attitude to work and be prepared to undertake work patterns to reflect the needs of the Service.
