Turn your passion for nature and learning into a seasonal adventure – join us as a Tutor from February 2026.

Love where you work!

Established in 1943, our network of Learning Locations provides day and residential outdoor education courses for all ages. We aim to create outstanding opportunities for everyone to learn about nature.

We value each of our team members and understand that every role is vital to deliver our mission, so, we provide great benefits* to reward and support you while you work with us.

What you’ll be doing

This role will see you working with primary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities to deliver curriculum-linked activities that will increase students understanding of nature and the environment.

Your day to day will include developing, planning, and delivering courses in outdoor teaching sites to students on science and geography school trips. This will involve leading groups of all abilities in the local environment, ensuring you always have the health and safety of the group in mind.

When you are not working in the field, you will also be happy to contribute to other aspects of working in a busy education centre. This is a very active role, some weeks will be long and tiring, but our tutors find this work very rewarding, and we promise you will too!

Follow this link to meet our Senior Tutor, Pippa. Let her show you what it is like to work at the Field Studies Council and why she loves where she works!

Please refer to the vacancy pack for full details of the responsibilities of the role.

Where you’ll be based

Flatford Mill is the Field Studies Council’s first centre, set in the heart of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surrounded by meadows, woodland and the River Stour, it combines centuries-old buildings – including Willy Lott’s House, made famous by Constable’s Haywain, and the medieval Valley Farm – with a landscape rich in history and learning opportunities.

Wildlife is part of everyday life here: kingfishers along the river, barn owls over the fields, dragonflies over the ponds, and even otters in the waterways. With the Stour Estuary and Walton-on-the-Naze close by, Flatford Mill is not only a special place to teach and explore – it is a truly inspiring place to work.

Who we’re looking for

You will have a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject and some previous experience of teaching or tutoring. You will also be confident with producing and preparing various learning resources. In addition, you will have:

  • A great work ethic where aptitude and attitude are key
  • A natural pride in the work you produce
  • A flexible and adaptive approach able to perform using your own initiative both independently and as a team player
  • A professional manner in all that you do
  • An empathy with the aims and objectives of Field Studies Council
  • A committed and proactive approach to personal development; motivated to learn new skills and overcome new challenges

Sound like the role for you? Come and be part of the team! We look forward to your application.
