Conservation & Wildlife

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Wildlife Warden on Lundy Island.

The successful applicant will have previous experience and track record as a Nature Reserve Warden with relevant management skills and experience.

A relevant degree in biological/natural science or compensating experience is required with experience of environmental statistics and G.I.S. desirable.

A background in Nature Conservation and understanding / experience of agricultural environment schemes, including bracken, rhododendron control and land management are desirable.

Interaction with visitors and management of the conservation team and volunteers, along with delivering guided walks and talks is a major part of the role, therefore excellent communication skills along with strong leadership are necessary.

Lundy was accredited in 2023 as part of the network of British & Irish Bird Observatories. The Warden will be responsible for the coordination of all aspects of ornithology on the island, including managing a daily census, an extensive programme of ringing, fieldwork, and preparation and publication of the annual Bird Report, working in close cooperation with the Lundy Bird Observatory Organising Committee and other ornithological organisations.

Candidates holding an 'A' or 'S' BTO ringing permit will be well placed, especially those with seabird endorsements, however all candidates will be considered. lundybirdobs.org.uk/what-we-do

A diving or snorkelling qualification and boat handling skills to RYA Power Boat Level 2 would be advantageous.

The Warden role is a central part of our small island management team and all island roles are integral part of our island community and lifestyle, which includes providing emergency response for which statutory training is provided.

The position is permanent and live-in on Lundy with accommodation and transport to the mainland provided. Enquiries from single people or couples will be considered with a position as a General Assistant, working with our Tavern, shop or Housekeeping team provided for a suitable partner.

Closing date for applications is Monday 6th October with initial interviews being held online on 13th October followed by a working interview on Lundy for successful candidates from the 16th to 18th October, for which transport and accommodation are provided.
