About Ocean Culture Life

Ocean Culture Life (OCL) is a global community of ocean storytellers, conservationists, and change-makers. We work across charitable and commercial spheres to amplify ocean advocacy through storytelling, partnerships, education, and events.

As we expand, we’re seeking a Head of Communications to take ownership of all communications across OCL. From strategy and team management to external representation, this role will ensure that OCL’s voice is clear, consistent, and compelling across every touchpoint.

About the Role

The Head of Communications is responsible for leading OCL’s communications team and overseeing all external and internal communications. You’ll manage and align outputs across our website, social media, newsletters, YouTube, partner campaigns, and events, ensuring everything reflects OCL’s mission and brand.

You’ll work directly with the Chief of Vision (COV), Head of Film, and Head of Social Media, helping to manage workflows and keep the team moving efficiently. You’ll also be the lead on external communications, from preparing media materials and event comms to supporting talks, panels, and press opportunities.

This role requires a balance of big-picture strategy and hands-on delivery. You’ll set the direction, manage the team, and also step in to refine copy, review visuals, and make sure outputs are professional and aligned.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Alignment

  • Lead OCL’s communications strategy, ensuring a unified voice across all platforms.
  • Manage and support the communications team (social media, film, design), keeping workflows efficient and outputs aligned.
  • Work directly with the COV, Head of Film, and Head of Social Media to integrate storytelling and campaigns.
  • Report to the CEO on progress, opportunities, and challenges across communications.

Digital Channels

  • Oversee OCL’s website and platform, ensuring content is current and compelling.
  • Guide YouTube strategy: content scheduling, optimisation, and audience engagement.
  • Provide oversight of social media planning and execution (in collaboration with the Social Media Manager).

Editorial & Publications

  • Draft and edit newsletters with inspiring storytelling and strong calls to action.
  • Oversee communications for events such as Ocean Talks, World Ocean Month, and global campaigns.
  • Lead on production of impact reports, partner brochures, and external materials.

External Communications

  • Represent OCL in communications with partners, media, and event organisers.
  • Prepare materials for talks, panels, press, and media coverage.
  • Ensure all partner communications (proposals, decks, reports) are clear, professional, and aligned with OCL’s voice.

Key Requirements

  • 7+ years’ experience in communications, PR, marketing, or editorial leadership.
  • Proven ability to manage and align a communications team.
  • Strong writing and editing skills; confident producing copy for diverse audiences.
  • Experience with websites (WordPress or similar CMS), newsletters (Mailchimp or similar), and social media oversight.
  • Familiarity with YouTube content and optimisation.
  • Skilled in balancing strategy with hands-on delivery.
  • Experience preparing external comms (press releases, media packs, event briefs).
  • Collaborative mindset and strong organisational skills.
  • Passion for ocean conservation, environmental justice, and storytelling.
  • Bonus: Nonprofit, CSR, or environmental comms experience.

Salary & Perks

  • Annual salary: £35,000 - £38,000 (with potential flexibility depending on experience).
  • Flexible working hours & fully remote.
  • Opportunity to travel to events, campaigns, and team gatherings.
  • Direct leadership role shaping the voice of a global movement.

This is a role for a leader who thrives on clarity, alignment, and impact. You’ll be in charge of all communications across OCL, managing the team, overseeing every channel, and representing OCL through talks, media, and partnerships. Every word, image, and message that leaves OCL will pass under your guidance.
