Job Title: Ranger Team Leader
Salary: £34,185 - £39,734 (Band C1) per annum
Working Hours: 35 hours per week, worked on a rota system

Contract: Permanent
Location: Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway

The role:

This a rare opportunity to take a leading role in a beautiful part of the country. You’ll work as part of the ranger management team, responsible for the day to day running of an efficient and effective team delivering our objectives from the National Park Partnership Plan, Corporate Plan, Ranger Service Operational Plan and other corporate initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and implement the development of strategies for Ranger Service delivery under the lead of the Ranger Service Manager (RSM) including the production of annual plans and annual reporting for the Ranger Service as a whole;
  • Act as the key point of contact for the Ranger Service both internally and with external partners as required;
  • Line manage a team of Rangers, including permanent staff, seasonal staff and volunteers as required;
  • Support development of the seasonal visitor management programme deliver allocated tasks & actions;
  • Develop and deliver staff learning and development opportunities for the Ranger Service;
  • Responsible for day to day management of buildings, sites and other Park Authority assets as required`;
  • Support the scheduling and monitoring of the use of all resources such as PPE, tools, vehicles, boats and any other resource requirements including maintenance of resource inventories;
  • Ensure that team & individual work plans are in place for a delegated Ranger Team and support the production, review and amendment of the staff rota for the Ranger Service as a whole;
  • Coordinate and manage team’s contribution to service delivery and develop recommendations for improvement to the RSM. This will include visitor management, education, events, community work, site maintenance, support for the statutory access functions, conservation and volunteering etc;
  • Ensure that performance management systems are implemented to ensure that the Ranger Service is accountable for its time and is recording outputs and outcomes effectively including work plans and patrol recording. Compile monthly reports and statistics as required;
  • Comply with all Park Authority policies & procedures required to deliver an agreed annual work programme including timely and accurate reporting;
  • Ensure Ranger Service compliance with NPA Health and Safety Policy, in particular Risk Assessments (including approval) and Lone Working procedures;
  • Develop the necessary partnerships and engagement with other organisations, land managers and the wider community to ensure the ongoing efficient and effective delivery of National Park Authority priorities;
  • Support the RSM in ensuring that the Ranger Service has efficient and timely communications with other key internal staff, particularly Communications, Estates, Visitor Operations, Projects and Executive, and external relationships as required;
  • Present considered ideas and suggestions on how to increase efficiency and improve Ranger Service delivery;
  • Ensure delegated team’s adherence to all required policies, procedures and required systems of work;
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade as required;

Who we are looking for:

Your skills, abilities and experience should include:

  • Experience of countryside site management, visitor management and associated resources
  • Experience of managing staff and or volunteers
  • Proven ability to achieve targets and manage workloads
  • Experience of managing resources
  • Good understanding of natural heritage, and visitor management issues
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Articulate with excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Ability to analyse information and produce reports
  • Knowledge & understanding of health & safety legislation
  • HND or equivalent qualification in a related discipline; or equivalent level experience within a similar role

Ideally, but not essential, you’ll also have:

  • Experience of working in a countryside service or similar environment with a strong customer focus
  • Experience in the delivery of environmental education
  • Experience in managing maintenance activities
  • One or more areas of specialism: biodiversity, team management, visitor management, maintenance, boat operation, education, volunteering, community engagement
  • Knowledge and understanding of Land Reform (Scotland) Act and other Scottish access and countryside legislation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of nature conservation legislation.
  • Degree or equivalent in related subject e.g. countryside management, conservation, recreation management
