Carbon, Climate & EnergySustainability

The successful applicant will lead a small team delivering the Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan 2025-2030. The plan covers projects to reduce the Council’s own greenhouse gas emissions and a diverse range of projects to help individuals and organisations in the district to reduce theirs. To give you a flavour, the projects include:

  • Helping householders improve the energy efficiency of their homes and install renewable energy
  • Developing a Climate Action Network that supports environmental community groups in our district to grow and to seed more groups
  • Exploring how more carbon dioxide can be stored in the district’s coastal and marine habitats
  • Collaborating with other local authorities on a Local Area Energy Plan
  • Working with other local authorities to analyse the climate adaptation steps that need to be taken locally.

The plan will largely be delivered through collaboration either with other teams in the Council or external organisations. You will need excellent knowledge of climate mitigation and adaptation issues and wider sustainability considerations. You must be able to juggle multiple projects at the same time. Climate change is a high-profile issue for the Council and the post-holder will attend committee meetings and other public events. Excellent written skills are needed as well as strong numeracy and Excel skills as the Council’s carbon footprint is calculated in-house.

You should have a degree in an Environmental Science, Carbon Management or relevant engineering specialism, or at least 5 years’ experience within a relevant sector e.g. carbon management, sustainability, sustainable building services engineering, renewable energy industry.

You will be working in the Council’s dynamic Environmental Strategy team and will be based in the scenic cathedral city of Chichester, with the opportunity for some home-working where appropriate.
