Conservation & Wildlife

We have a fantastic opportunity to join a small and dedicated team who are delivering a massive transformation of the landscape at the Great Fen. The oldest, and one of the largest of the Wildlife Trusts living landscapes, is well into a new and exciting phase – thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Funds’ new grant award we are restoring farmed arable land to wetland, securing the missing link between two Fenland National Nature Reserves (Holme and Woodwalton Fens). We are also demonstrating new wet farming practices which we hope will inspire change across farmed peat soils nationally.

The successful candidate will have a pivotal role in delivering hard and soft landscaping and raising water tables to create hundreds of hectares of new wetland habitat. This will be through managing large value contracts with specialist wetland civil engineers as well as providing hands on management. The Project Officer role will work alongside the Project Manager to ensure our extensive programme of restoration work is delivered and reported on, while assisting with establishment management and monitoring (for example tractor use, protected species monitoring), they will also support the development of relationships with many partnerships across the Fenland area. The Project Officer will also be heavily involved in planning and preparation for future works, for example assisting with the preparation of funding bids through quotes/tendering and planning application preparation.

We are looking for a motivated and friendly individual who can bring their existing conservation, wetland and contract management experience to the team and leap straight into a complicated and exciting programme of activity. They will be an organised self-starter who will relish the challenge of bringing together all of the work streams to create something magical. Practical experience and a can-do attitude is a must.
