Rivers, Water & HydrologyEcology

This exciting new role will coordinate a unique community-led environmental initiative along Cod Beck, from its source at Osmotherley to its confluence with the River Swale. The project aims to build a robust ecological dataset and identify future sites for biodiversity improvement and water quality interventions.

The role will work across the local community, drawing in support from volunteers, local naturalists, schools, and partner agencies to deliver citizen science activities, support ecological surveying, and promote stewardship of the Cod Beck corridor.

You will coordinate consultants, manage timelines, engage with stakeholders, and ensure that local voices and values are reflected in the delivery and legacy of the work. This is a delivery-focused post, laying the foundations for a larger, future Heritage Lottery Fund bid and long-term ecological action.

Why this Role Matters

The Friends of Cod Beck are passionate about improving and protecting the Cod Beck, whilst inspiring the community to build a stronger, greener, healthier place to live and visit. Cod Beck is more than just a watercourse; it’s a lifeline for local biodiversity and a thread connecting multiple communities. But data on its ecological state is patchy, and opportunities for local involvement in conservation have been limited.

This role helps bridge that gap. The post holder will be expected to put local people at the heart of environmental monitoring and empower the community to take a more active role in protecting and restoring the places they care about. By connecting people with nature, we’re also promoting wellbeing, identity, and shared purpose, which is why Community Works are delighted to partner with the Friends of Cod Beck with this project.
