Climate News Tracker, a new not-for-profit organisation committed to enhancing the visibility and impact of climate change reporting in UK broadcast and digital news, is seeking a Journalism Insights Analyst to join our team.

We are looking for someone with real experience of working in UK newsrooms, or close collaboration with them. You may be a current journalist seeking a change from day to day news production. You will ideally have a background in climate, science, or environmental journalism but newsroom experience is the key. This role requires a strong understanding of the UK’s main news organisations and their audiences as you will critically evaluate and feedback how climate and other topics are reported across major TV, radio, and online platforms.

If successful, you’ll play a vital role in supporting journalism by assessing not just the frequency of coverage, but the editorial framing, tone, accuracy, and effectiveness of Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs) and others. Your insights will directly inform how newsrooms understand their own content, connect with audiences, and report the biggest story of our time

About Us

Founded and led by journalists, Climate News Tracker works in partnership with the University of Exeter’s Centre for Climate Communication and Data Science (C3DS) to track and analyse climate news. We monitor how climate issues are represented and work with journalists to support more effective, audience-focused reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Watch, listen, and read UK news content across TV, radio, and digital platforms, with a focus on climate change coverage.
  • Conduct in-depth qualitative analysis to assess framing, language, tone, and story structure.
  • Assess how effectively content informs and engages audiences on complex climate issues.
  • Use tracking tools and commercial search platforms to identify key trends in coverage, and compare how broadcasters and publishers report a story.
  • Collaborate with Climate News Tracker’s data scientists, editors, and researchers to plan and implement media insights.
  • Produce and write regular reports, website articles and newsletters.
  • Present regular feedback on missed opportunities direct to newsrooms based on both qualitative and quantitative findings.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience in, or working alongside, UK newsrooms, ideally in climate, science, or public interest journalism.
  • Knowledge of science and climate reporters and their output, as well as an understanding of news production and commissioning of stories for TV, radio, and digital.
  • Knowledge of qualitative content analysis, including framing, narrative, and discourse evaluation.
  • Excellent writing skills with high attention to detail and editorial nuance, especially subbing and publishing web articles, newsletters, or producing for broadcast.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly to non-specialist audiences.
  • Familiarity with structured data and experience working with large media datasets.
  • Confident use of spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets) and data visualisation tools.

Desirable Skills

  • Background in journalism, media analysis, or climate communication.
  • Experience with audience research and editorial impact measurement.
  • Ability to work independently, managing your own workflow and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., Python, R) is a bonus but not required.

Working Arrangements

The position will begin as a remote role, with a transition to hybrid working in London that will include both in-office and remote days. Occasional UK travel may be required. You must have the right to work in the UK.

Diversity & Inclusion

Climate News Tracker is committed to building a diverse, inclusive team. We strongly encourage applications from underrepresented groups, particularly in climate journalism and media research.
