Senior Surveyor
This position combines both office and field responsibilities, offering the chance to contribute to a wide range of hydrographic and geophysical projects. You’ll be engaged throughout the entire project lifecycle, from planning and data acquisition through processing, quality control, and final deliverables. The role covers a diverse suite of surveying techniques, including multibeam and single-beam echosounders, side-scan sonar, magnetometers, sub-bottom profilers, vessel-mounted and aerial LiDAR, as well as photogrammetric survey methods.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and manage project logistics, risk assessments, equipment hire, and accommodation
- Schedule and allocate survey staff, manage priorities and timelines
- Provide remote and on-site support to field teams
- Perform complex data processing and rigorous QC
- Write reports and produce final client deliverables
- Install, configure, calibrate, and maintain survey systems (patch tests, latency, SVPs, etc.)
- Manage vessel/equipment defects and servicing schedules
- Develop and review standard operating procedures
Skills and Qualifications
Essential:
- Degree (2:1 or better) in hydrographic surveying or closely related subject, or a Masters (Distinction) in directly relevant subject.
- At least 2 years’ hands-on experience with single-beam and multibeam systems
- Proven ability to install and accurately offset multibeam systems
- Proficiency in industry-standard acquisition and processing software (e.g. QPS Qinsy, Hypack, Caris, POSPac, etc.) and CAD packages
- Experience working on vessels under 12 m
- Full UK driving licence
- Willing to spend time in the field as required
- Full UK working rights and fluent English
- Live (or willing to relocate) within 30–45 minutes commute of DT2 postcode.
- Right to work in the UK.
Desirable:
- Previous Senior Surveyor experience or clear potential to step up from existing position to fulfil this role with training
- Hypack experience
- Side-scan, sub-bottom, or magnetometer data collection, processing and QC
- Boat handling qualifications and/or experience towing trailers up to 3,500 kg (BE category an advantage)
- UAS (drone) pilot qualification
Working Arrangements
The position will be based at the Shoreline Surveys office when not undertaking fieldwork, working closely with the wider team. As part of the role, you will be required to carry out survey work away from home, typically averaging 4–8 overnight stays per month.
