Technical Analyst (GIS)

Purpose: Provide technical GIS and data analysis support across a growing portfolio of environmental projects. Responsibilities will include supporting the development of our data sharing hubs, portals, data collection apps and maps, and providing GIS support and training to our network of member Rivers Trusts in the UK and Ireland.

The Rivers Trust is a leading environmental charity and the umbrella body of The Rivers Trust movement, comprising over 65 independent local charities across the UK and Ireland. Our vision is for wild, healthy, natural rivers valued by all. We are at a critical point in our history as we expand to deliver projects to protect and replenish this critical part of the natural environment. Our research and expertise are now needed more urgently than ever as water quality and supply move up the public agenda. We are looking for a motivated GIS professional with strong technical skills and a willingness to learn, to join our growing Technical Team of GIS, data, modelling and monitoring experts. We are seeking someone who enjoys using their technical skills to collaboratively tackle environmental problems and who is passionate about protecting the environment. You will be working across a range of collaborative projects in the UK and Ireland, including the Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CaSTCo) project, which is empowering local communities and citizen scientists to contribute valued data and evidence to help drive action for healthier rivers.

This is a full-time, home-based, permanent position (subject to ongoing funding). You must have the right to work in the UK and can be based anywhere in mainland UK, with some travel to meetings and conferences mainly in England, Wales and Ireland. You will be supported remotely by senior colleagues and will need to be comfortable working from home for most of the time. We offer flexibility around working hours, including the option of a 9 day fortnight - time off in lieu is also available. We offer 25 days holiday pro rata (rising to 28 days) plus statutory public holidays. The role is a grade 3 position with a starting salary of £29,000 - 32,000 (pro rata for part time) plus benefits including 9% employer pension contribution.

The main duties and responsibilities are:

• Deliver GIS and data-focused project work, produce high-quality technical outputs, manage quality assurance, and meet agreed timelines, supported by senior colleagues.
• Develop, manage and enhance GIS applications, dashboards and data hubs, using user-centred design principles and incorporating feedback to improve functionality and usability.
• Analyse and visualise complex environmental datasets to generate clear, accessible insights, and communicate findings through reports, presentations and visualisation tools for internal and external audiences.
• Work directly with end users to understand their needs, providing practical technical GIS and data management support, training, guidance and troubleshooting to ensure tools and data are used effectively.

Knowledge, skills, experience, and personal qualities:

Essential

• Experience using the Esri stack of applications including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to manage, analyse and visualise environmental data
• Strong organisational skills, commitment to quality work and a proactive approach to problem solving
• Experience of working in a team and collaborating on project work
• Great verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences

Desirable

• Experience delivering technical support or training to end users and gathering and responding to user needs
• Familiarity with basic quality assurance processes or willingness to learn and apply agreed standards
• A good understanding of how data and digital tools underpin collaborative action for the environment.
• Experience with other GIS or data visualisation tools (e.g. QGIS, PowerBI or Tableau)
• Knowledge of, or interest in developing skills in, coding languages such as Python or R
