Senior Land Management Surveying Specialist

The role
This is an exciting opportunity to join our South-Central Land Management team at Natural Resources Wales and play a key part in shaping how land and assets are managed across one of Wales’ most diverse regions. Together, we ensure the Welsh Government Woodland Estate is safe, accessible, and welcoming — a place for everyone to enjoy.
In this role, you’ll work on a wide variety of projects that make a real difference to communities and the environment. From forestry operations and land management to flood and water asset management, your work will help protect and enhance the natural landscape. You’ll also lead on negotiating environmental land agreements, managing leases and access arrangements, supporting community partnerships, and contributing to proactive land stewardship that balances environmental, social, and commercial needs.
We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, forward‑thinking, and practical, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You’ll collaborate with customers, partners, and stakeholders to embed the principles of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) and deliver wellbeing outcomes across South‑Central Wales.
This role offers the chance to make a high‑level professional contribution, ensuring NRW effectively manages the financial, legal, operational, and reputational risks associated with land and asset management. It’s a varied, influential position where your expertise will directly support Wales’ environment, communities, and future.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to an NRW office within the place base / location above and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.
What you will do
- Provide authoritative land management expertise to senior leaders, supporting NRW’s land stewardship, legal compliance, and strategic budget management. Lead on land acquisitions, asset valuations, and professional advice on legal and tax matters, ensuring decisions are robust and defensible.
- Take responsibility for complex task groups and high‑profile projects, managing multifunctional teams to deliver successful outcomes. Oversee land transactions, claims settlements, and the instruction of legal representatives in cases involving conveyancing, litigation, and disputes.
- Apply professional judgement to shape business plans, strategy, policy, and guidance. Ensure the latest developments in the field are reflected in NRW’s approach, maintaining your professional accreditation (RICS) and embedding best practice across the organisation.
- Coach, mentor, and support colleagues across Operations, acting as a technical lead where required. Work with other specialists to promote consistent advisory and regulatory practices across NRW.
- Represent NRW as a professional expert in internal and external forums at Wales and UK level. Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, partners, and management teams to deliver positive outcomes and enhance NRW’s reputation.
- Maintain auditable records of actions and outcomes, demonstrating compliance with all legal and procedural requirements and ensuring accountability in high‑risk decision‑making.
- Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
- Full Chartered Surveyor membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. (RICS)
- Substantial relevant experience in the field and ability to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and personal and professional credibility and a commitment to continuing professional development.
- Able to manage complex Projects and Programmes of work.
- In-depth knowledge in land and property management to enable the provision of objective advice to others on specialist issues.
- Excellent inter-personal and influencing skills and the ability to develop and maintain good relationships and networks with a range of individuals at all levels.
Welsh Language level requirements
- Essential: Level A1 – Entry level
- Desirable: Level B2 – Upper intermediate level
