Project Officer (Part Time): Caring for God’s Acre (CfGA), Hafanau Heddwch
Location: Home/Office/Hybrid
Salary: £30,000 to £35,000 per annum pro rata
Contract: Fixed term until end September 2027
Hours: 3 days per week

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as Project Officer, helping to deliver Hafanau Heddwch across Wales. Our office base is in Craven Arms, Shropshire, this role can be office based, working at a distance or a hybrid.

Hafanau Heddwch (devlopment phase) will be a multi-year, Wales wide project being developed by CfGA and Church in Wales (CiW), with other significant partners. The project has received funding from CiW and The National Lottery Heritage Fund (Heritage Fund) to appoint a part time Development Manager and part time Project Officer who will lead the project in this crucial development phase, build a compelling case for funding, forge strong partnerships and submit multiple funding applications for the project to move into its delivery phase. It is expected that the delivery phase will be a multi-million pound project spanning across Wales and making a significant positive difference to burial ground heritage.

Hafanau Heddwch will transform Welsh burial grounds into highly valued heritage hotspots and this will be achieved by delivering a wide package of community engagement events, increasing burial ground biodiversity, recruiting and supporting volunteers, showcasing burial ground heritage, and celebrating Welsh culture found within these special places.

CfGA wish to appoint an experienced and dynamic part time Project Officer who will assist the Project Manager in the development and submission of the delivery phase application to the Heritage Fund and other funding bodies. The work of the Project Officer will include supporting the Project Manager in developing stronger links with other faiths and denominations, community groups, Local Authorities, Community Councils, and volunteering support organisations. The Project Officer will build on our initial consultation with CiW Archdeacons, consulting more widely and at a parish level in order to shape the project and to seek support. The Project Officer will also take a lead role in the development of six or seven case studies to support our main funding application. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven experience within a project officer/project manager setting and will have excellent organisational and communication skills and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups.

CfGA are also seeking part time support for core activities including site management planning, replying to those seeking advice on burial ground nature conservation issues, writing regular articles and preparing the content for new resources. For those seeking full time work rather than part time, this may be an option.

About Caring for God’s Acre

Caring for God’s Acre was established in 2000 as a national charity, promoting the conservation of burial sites and supporting the people who look after and maintain them. There are over 25,000 burial grounds across the UK, ranging from small rural medieval churchyards to large Victorian city cemeteries, spanning different cultures, religions and centuries. Appealing to many who are interested in local history and the natural world, burial grounds encapsulate the history of communities whilst offering refuge for our native wildlife. Many burial sites are managed by a few volunteers who are keen to preserve both the monuments and the wildlife but want guidance on how best to achieve this. Our input can help them to preserve rare species of plants and wildflowers and we advise on management of grassland to encourage wildlife whilst still allowing access to visitors and relatives. Issues such as lichen on gravestones and monuments falling into disrepair are also part of our remit and we run a telephone and email advice service for burial ground managers, signposting to other experts if required.
