Overview

jh ecology is a well-established ecological consultancy based in Taunton, Somerset. We undertake habitat and protected species surveys, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and design mitigation strategies for a wide range of private and public-sector clients. We work with a network of local ecologists throughout the South West and are committed to furthering nature conservation through our consultancy work.

We’re looking to recruit a seasonal assistant ecologist to join our friendly and supportive team. The position will last for six months starting in April/May 2026 with the potential for this to be extended.

About you

Training will be provided however you should have the following:

  • Educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject (we will consider candidates without a degree but with some ecological consultancy experience)
  • Eligible for membership of CIEEM
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with good time-keeping
  • Excellent written English and good communication and interpersonal skills
  • IT proficient
  • Good observational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work antisocial hours
  • Proactive approach and willingness to pitch in
  • Live within commuting distance of Taunton or willing to relocate and eligible to work in the UK (this is essential)
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a car insured for business (this is essential)

The role

The role is a great introduction to ecological consultancy and is ideal for a recent graduate. We’re ideally located for you to gain experience in a wide range of species and habitat surveys.

You will predominantly assist with survey preparation and undertaking habitat and protected species surveys. There will be office time for data entry and analysis and preparing quotes and drafting ecological reports.

We’re offering the following:

  • Competitive salary that reflects your experience – £25,000 per annum pro rata (37.5 hour week)
  • 28 days of annual leave a year pro rata
  • Whilst the nature of survey work means evening work, you will not be expected to work more than 2-3 evenings a week. We operate a TOIL system to ensure a work life balance

  • Equipment including PPE, laptop and mobile phone

When not working in the field we operate flexible working, with part-office based at The Collar Factory in Taunton (https://www.forwardspace.co.uk/collar-factory/) and part home-based.

Highly desirable skills

  • Previous ecological consultancy experience (voluntary or paid basis), especially bat surveys
  • Experience of QGIS
  • Bat sound analysis experience
