Project & GIS Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and collaborative team working at the forefront of river and catchment restoration across Wales. As part of Afonydd Cymru’s small but impactful team, you will play a key role in supporting the coordination of river and catchment restoration, working closely with regional rivers trusts and partners. The post offers excellent scope for professional development, project delivery experience, and the chance to apply and grow your GIS and data skills in a meaningful, real-world environmental context.
Responsibilities
Project Support
- Work closely with the Afonydd Cymru team to support the coordination and strategic development of river and catchment restoration programmes delivered by regional Rivers Trusts across Wales, including our fisheries restoration programme.
- Assist with project planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting
- Work collaboratively with regional Rivers Trusts to align data, priorities and delivery plans with national programme objective.
- Help maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, records, and timelines
- Assist with funding claims, monitoring, and collation of supporting evidence
GIS & Data
- Undertake mapping of environmental data using GIS software to support catchment planning and inform priority areas and actions for delivery
- Assist with spatial analysis to support project development, reporting, and funding applications
- Produce accurate, engaging, and visually clear maps and figures for reports, funding bids, and presentations
- Work with regional Rivers Trusts in Wales to collate field data and survey results for inclusion in an All-Wales database
- Support with the standardisation and co-ordination of data collection methods and walkovers across Trusts
- Maintain, update, and manage geospatial datasets and associated metadata
- Support evidence-led decision-making and prioritisation of river restoration and wider project opportunities across Wales through spatial analysis
The candidate
Qualifications, skills & experience
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in environmental science, geography, ecology, GIS, or a related field
- Experience using GIS software (e.g. QGIS or ArcGIS)
- Competent user of MS Excel, with experience managing and working with large datasets
- Understanding of river catchments, freshwater environments, or nature recovery
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to be self-motivated, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to travel within Wales (full UK driving license and access to car)
Preferable skills & experience
- Experience supporting or delivering environmental, conservation or freshwater-focused projects
- Knowledge of ecosystem pressures affecting rivers and catchments
- Familiarity with Esri products such as ArcGIS Experience Builder, Survey123, and ArcGIS Online, or a willingness to learn
- Welsh Speaker
