We are looking for a Farm Worker - Livestock Person to join the team at Sedgemoor Reserves, in the Somerset Levels and Moors, to play a key role in delivering habitat management in one of the most important wetlands in the UK. What's the role about?

This role will lead and take responsibility for the daily routine care of cattle on site from April to November. This will include safe movement between locations, penning and rescue from ditches whilst maintaining high welfare standards and H&S compliance for staff and volunteers.

You will coordinate a small team in undertaking daily assessment of livestock welfare and health, dealing with issues as they arise, including being responsible for the administration of prescribed medicines as directed by the livestock owner. You will be responsible for the regular communication with the cattle owners as and when required, maintaining good working relationships.

In addition to livestock care you will undertake a range of habitat and agricultural management activities on the reserve, including hay cutting and topping. You will also be responsible for overseeing and undertaking fencing, and general estate management to enable management delivering the ecological management plan objectives.

You will oversee and be responsible for the maintenance and operation of machinery, agricultural and general equipment by undertaking day-to-day maintenance, repair and visual checks and arranging maintenance and repair by specialist engineers.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Proven and confident ability in the handling and movement of livestock particularly cattle.
  • Proficient and competent skills in the use and maintenance of agricultural machinery in farm yard and field operations including knowledge and experience of farming and practical habitat and estate management on grasslands and wetlands.
  • Proficient and competent in a range of land management tasks related to the grazing operations e.g. building and maintaining fences, gates, electric fencing, livestock holding pens etc
  • Problem solving skills
  • Proven track record of completing work alone and within a varied team.
  • Good communication skills including working with graziers, hauliers, contractors and neighbouring farmers.
  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in using equipment such as tractor with implements and sit astride ATV
  • Knowledge and experience of servicing and maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to a high standard.
  • Personal organisational skills including time management and prioritisation.
  • Proven conscientious approach to implementing and updating health and safety assessments and records.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of living in and working in remote areas and small communities
  • Experience in maintaining a high standard of record keeping.
  • Undertaking biological surveys, with good grassland and wetland ecological knowledge.

Additional information:

  • This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations.
  • This role will require regular weekend work and occasional antisocial hours so will need someone who is able to be flexible.

This is a Permanent Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week.
