Atlantic58 is seeking a Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) / Environmental Manager to support our environmental team capabilities for renewables and infrastructure projects in the Western Isles.

This role is suitable for a construction sector candidate with some environmental experience OR an ecologist / environmental consultant with experience in the construction sector.

Atlantic58 currently provides support to several projects across the Western Isles through its existing team of Ecologists and Environmental Consultants. Due to imminent infrastructure developments and demand across the Isle of Lewis, we are seeking a new Environmental Manager / Environmental Clerk of Works to expand our growing capabilities in this sector.

About Us

Atlantic58 is a small and rapidly growing ecological and environmental consultancy based in the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland. We provide professional environmental and ecological consultancy and research services, with a strong focus on projects rooted in the unique social, cultural and ecological context of the Western Isles.

Our office is set within the picturesque Lews Castle Grounds in Stornoway, and is located within part of the UHI North, West and Hebrides campus, providing close links with the University and offering opportunities for collaborative research and applied ecological projects. The office space is dog-friendly and includes a private enclosed outdoor area.

Working in the Western Isles offers the opportunity to work in one of the UK’s most wildlife-rich landscapes. Our team often works with nationally and internationally designated sites, rare and protected species, and sensitive habitats.

The Role

The role is based on the Isle of Lewis and involves delivering site based environmental management services to projects across the island. Depending on experience and progression, there is scope for the role to develop over time, into a management and supervisory role, to increase responsibility and technical oversight which will be reflected in the salary offered.

Key Responsibilities

You will play an important role in monitoring environmental compliance during construction, while also acting as an advisor to clients:

Key Duties

Typical duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Undertaking regular site inspections to monitor environmental protection measures.
  • Supporting construction works to comply with ecological method statements, construction environmental management plans (CEMP), and planning conditions.
  • Advising site teams on protected species legislation and habitat protection.
  • Monitor works in sensitive areas such as watercourses, or peatlands.
  • Produce site visit reports with findings, actions, and recommendations.
  • Provide updates to clients, project managers, and regulators and / or supporting external audits.
  • Identify environmental risks, constraints and opportunities early, and work with contractors and clients to implement effective mitigation.
  • Lead pollution prevention and incident response preparedness (e.g., spill response, reporting, corrective actions).

Supervisory / Management

Depending on experience a candidate may be suitable to progress into a supervisory / coordinating role with the following:

  • Support other ECoWs / EnvCoWs working across sites
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and technical guidance to ensure consistent approach, quality of advice, and robust record keeping.
  • Lead the growth and development of the EnvCoW / ECoW capability in collaboration with Ecology Team and wider business.
  • Plan resourcing and scheduling of ECoW / EnvCoW inputs in collaboration with project managers and the wider team.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, ecology, water management or related field OR construction background with qualifications / evidence of environmental management (e.g. pollution prevention, CIWEM membership)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in environmental management or 5 years construction site experience with evidence of environmental management.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and planning compliance
  • Confident communicating with contractors and site teams
  • Ability to work independently and make practical decisions
  • Good understanding of health & safety on construction sites
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site work.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • CSCS card
  • Experience developing and managing CEMPs and associated documentation (e.g. EMPs, PMPs)
  • 4x4 driver training
  • Peatland management, drainage or water
  • Familiarity with environmental reporting frameworks
  • Familiarity with environmental auditing frameworks
  • Professional membership (e.g., ISEP, CIWEM, AEnvCoW, CIEEM) and commitment to CPD.
