United Utilities is on a mission to create a greener, healthier North West and our woodlands play a vital role in that vision. We’re looking for a Woodland Biodiversity Officer to help protect, enhance and champion our diverse woodland estate while supporting delivery of our Biodiversity Performance Commitment (BPC).

The role

You’ll work closely with our team to manage trees and woodlands across our catchment, ensuring they continue to safeguard raw water quality, support thriving habitats and species, and offer real amenity value for local communities.

From ecological surveys and site planning to contractor oversight and stakeholder engagement, you’ll help deliver sustainable woodland management aligned with FSC and UKWAS standards. You’ll support the development and of a strong BPC delivery pipeline and lead on its delivery as well as supporting with new woodland creation, WINEP and Partnership projects.

This is a hands -on, field‑based role with some office work at your nearest UU site perfect for someone who loves being outdoors and wants to make a tangible environmental impact.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting delivery of the Biodiversity Performance Commitment and woodland management programme
  • Assisting with species and habitat surveys, site assessments and management plans
  • Helping plan and deliver woodland creation and WINEP projects
  • Monitoring woodland condition, tree safety and estate infrastructure
  • Ensuring permissions, licences and RAMS are in place for all works
  • Overseeing contractors and ensuring safe, high‑quality delivery
  • Contributing to FSC accreditation and woodland management records
  • Supporting budget management, funding opportunities and timber sales
  • Representing United Utilities with local stakeholders and internal teams

What we’re looking for

  • City & Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) in Forestry, Ecology, Woodland Management or related field
  • Strong understanding of woodland ecology, silviculture, arboriculture and relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of UKFS and UKWAS standards
  • Experience in woodland management or ecological work
  • Confident working independently outdoors across varied terrain
  • GIS/mapping and contract management experience
  • Effective communicator and team player
  • Full UK driving licence (vehicle provided)
