Due to continued growth, Colmer Ecology is seeking an ecologist or senior ecologist, based in our Exeter office. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate eager to further develop their career and join a respected, south-west consultancy.

Who we are

Colmer Ecology is an independent ecological consultancy based in Brampford Speke, Exeter, Devon. Our converted office is located right by the River Exe, in a rural farm environment with fantastic, far-reaching countryside views.

We pride ourselves in delivering a comprehensive portfolio of ecological services and regularly work with developers, private individuals, local planning authorities, planning consultants and charities to address clients’ specific project requirements.

Our client base encompasses largely southern England, although we occasionally work on projects throughout the UK. We also provide specialist advice to large multi-national organisations, conservation charities, as well as the renewable sector.

Main duties

Depending on experience, you will join as an ecologist or senior ecologist. Both roles include delivering on a wide range of projects including undertaking fieldwork, liaising with clients, completing assessments, managing sub-consultants and report writing.

The senior ecologist will be expected to have increased leadership experience, as well as added responsibility for project management, technical input, managing junior staff, and providing quality assurance on projects/reports. In addition, the senior position will have experience in fee/tender writing and ability to win work.

The position is permanent, full-time, starting from May 2026 (or following notice period as required). Part time will also be considered.

Key responsibilities

  • Planning and undertaking ecological surveys and ability to work independently with a high level of motivation.
  • Project management experience and client liaison.
  • Demonstrate practical experience and the technical ability to write concise reports for PEA, EcIA, LEMPS, BNG, HMMP (and understanding of HRA at senior level).
  • Deliver work to high professional standard and act within CIEEM Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
  • Ability to carry out UK Habitat classification surveys independently.
  • Interpersonal skills, adaptability, forward thinker and problem solver.
  • Surveying, design and implementation of protected species mitigation, especially bats, dormice and reptiles.
  • Ability to support and manage sub-consultants.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

Qualifications and experience

  • A minimum of three years’ consultancy experience.
  • Membership with CIEEM (minimum associate) or similar.
  • Strong botanical identification skills and expertise at UK Habitat classification surveys.
  • Demonstrable proficiency with BNG, condition assessments as well as mapping capabilities using QGIS and/or AutoCAD.
  • Practical knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, survey guidance for protected species and the planning system.
  • Excellent English communication skills (both verbal and written), with good planning and organisational skills.
  • Initiative and enthusiasm.
  • Keen and genuine interest in ecology and biodiversity.
  • A full valid UK/EEC driving license is essential with access to your own car.

Desirable skills

  • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Colmer Ecology would consider candidates without a bachelor’s degree but with relevant experience.
  • A protected species survey licence is not a requirement, but applicants working towards one are desirable (particularly bat licence with proven experience of working under protected species licences).
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Ability to support and mentor junior staff.
  • Business development experience.

Salary

We offer a competitive salary of £27,000 – £32,000 per annum for the ecologist position and £33,000 – £40,000 per annum for the senior ecologist position (based on a standard 37.5 hour week, dependent on experience and skills). Part time would be considered.

In addition:

  • Pension contribution after qualifying period.
  • 28 days statutory holiday (pro-rata if required).
  • An additional day of paid leave on your birthday.
  • Additional two days of leave over Christmas and New Year, relating to office closure period.
  • Personal and company related performance bonus (pro-rata for first year or dependent on full time/part time).
