About the role

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils are looking for an experienced and passionate ecological professional to lead the Planning Service's Ecology Team. This is an exciting and varied role where you will be working with a team of specialist advisers who are helping to shape the future environment of southern Oxfordshire. The role involves working alongside a multi-disciplinary team including Arborists, Heritage Officers, Landscape Architects and Urban Designers.

Essential criteria for the role

  • Degree or diploma in Ecology or related discipline or equivalent level of experience
  • Member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management
  • A minimum of five years professional experience
  • Full driving license and ability to travel independently

Key responsibilities for the role

  • Providing ecological advice to development management officers, planning applicants, consultants and teams across the councils
  • Ensuring planning decisions comply with statutory responsibilities related to the protection of habitats and species and deliver Local Plan biodiversity policy requirements
  • To represent the councils and give evidence at planning appeals, court proceedings and public examinations
  • Represent the councils on Ecology issues on external bodies, partnerships and steering groups as required
  • Provision of strategic ecological advice to planning policy teams, assistance with policy development, production of expert technical evidence/reports, production of SPDs to support policy development
