About us

The Forest is home to rare and threatened species that rely on its diverse habitats to survive. Every tree planted, every meadow restored, and every hedgerow nurtured provides a haven for native wildlife to thrive.

About the role

This role forms part of the wider Forest Operations team. As a Biodiversity Officer, you will plan, develop and implement ecological enhancement across the Forest, undertaking field surveys, practical habitat work, data collection and project delivery.

You will lead ecological enhancement projects and monitoring programmes across multiple habitat types including woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and traditional orchards.

What you’ll do:

  • Improve habitats including woodland, grassland, wetland & orchards
  • Lead surveys for birds, butterflies, protected species & more
  • Record data using digital tools & GIS
  • Work with volunteers, contractors & the wider Forest team to delivery habitat management projects

What we’re looking for:

  • Practical experience in a relevant conservation-based role.
  • Working knowledge of UK habitats, wildlife and standard survey methods.
  • Experience of UK ecological surveys (volunteering or placements included).
  • Ability to identify indicator species of key habitats and willingness to learn.
  • Competent practical skills such as using hand tools for habitat management.
  • Experience working with, leading and training volunteers - including habitat management and survey technique.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather and terrain.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and confident lone working.
  • Full UK driving licence (manual)
