Conservation & Wildlife

The Orkney Native Wildlife Project (ONWP) is the world’s largest stoat eradication initiative, launched in 2018 as a partnership between RSPB Scotland, NatureScot and Orkney Islands Council. Working closely with local communities and landowners, the project aims to protect Orkney’s unique native wildlife and support its internationally recognised wildlife tourism.

We are now seeking a Project Reporting Manager to ensure the project continues to deliver against key milestones and meets all partner and funder requirements.

As the ONWP Project Reporting Manager, you will play a central role in tracking, analysing, and communicating project progress across a team of more than 40 staff. You will ensure that all milestones, deliverables, and evaluation tasks are recorded accurately and reported clearly to partners and funders.

You will work closely with managers to prepare clear, well-evidenced project change requests and ensure decision-makers have the information they need in a timely and accessible format. You will lead on reporting to the project’s Steering Group and will contribute to ensuring that risks, issues, and compliance requirements are monitored and communicated.

The role will also have responsibility for coordinating the effective running of the ONWP office, including overseeing supplies and general office management.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Experience creating, maintaining or improving project reporting systems, including using Excel tools such as formulas, pivot tables or structured data tables to track milestones and progress.
  • Experience analysing project information to identify gaps, inconsistencies, risks or issues, and summarising findings clearly for different audiences, including non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to produce clear, concise written reports and updates for partners, funders or steering groups.
  • Experience preparing or contributing to evidence-based proposals or change requests that support effective decision-making.
  • Experience applying or monitoring quality standards or compliance requirements, and escalating concerns when necessary.
  • Experience identifying, recording and monitoring project risks and issues using structured tools (e.g. risk or issue logs) and developing practical mitigation actions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including supporting colleagues to meet reporting or data requirements and maintaining constructive relationships across a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Proven organisational and prioritisation abilities, including managing multiple tasks or deadlines in a fast-paced project environment and coordinating inputs from different team members.
  • Experience contributing to project closure or handover processes, such as coordinating documentation, actions or legacy information.
  • Experience overseeing office-based systems-such as supplies, equipment or administrative processes-to support effective day-to-day operations.
  • Able to prepare clear updates or reports for project partners or funders, gained through previous roles, training, volunteering or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with conservation, environmental or land-management settings, developed through work, study, volunteering or other equivalent experience.

This role will be based in the Orkney Native Wildlife Project office in Kirkwall, Orkney.

This is a Fixed-Term role to the end of December 2027 for 37.5 hours per week. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.

About RSPB

The RSPB is a charity for the conservation of birds and nature. We bring people together who love birds and other wildlife, and who want to take action to restore the health and diversity of the natural world. We carry out conservation on a large scale, protect and restore habitats, and save species from extinction. We’re living in a nature and climate emergency, and we won’t stop whilst the threats persist. We believe our work makes a real difference to the world we live in. It takes a great team to save nature and we need a wide range of skills to make it happen. As an RSPB employee, you will be helping to save nature every time you come to work. There’s never been a more important time to protect our wildlife and wild places, so we want to make sure you feel rewarded for everything you help us to achieve.
