We’re looking for a dynamic and passionate Advocacy & Parliamentary Officer to represent recreational angling at the highest level with policy decision makers.

The Parliamentary Officer will ensure that recreational angling has a strong, informed and influential voice in Parliament through promoting the work of the Angling Trust in its mission to protect, promote and develop recreational angling.

Working across both freshwater and marine policy within the Campaigns & Policy team, the postholder will support and deliver parliamentary engagement and advocacy activity that helps protect, promote and develop angling in England and Wales. The role will focus on building relationships with parliamentarians, strengthening Angling Trust’s presence and profile at Westminster, and supporting the organisation’s wider policy and campaigning objectives.

What you’ll be doing

  • Parliamentary engagement and monitoring
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with Ministers, MPs, Peers, parliamentary staff and relevant All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs).
  • Draft high-quality parliamentary briefings for MPs and Peers on freshwater and marine issues affecting recreational angling with support from the wider Campaigns team
  • Work closely with policy leads across freshwater and marine to translate technical and policy detail into accessible and persuasive parliamentary material.
  • Act as a key link between the Campaigns & Policy team and parliamentary stakeholders.

Who you are

  • Demonstrable understanding of the UK parliamentary system and how to influence decision-making within it.
  • Experience of producing clear, accurate and persuasive briefings for political or public policy audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy and technical issues into accessible language.
  • Ability to monitor, analyse and summarise parliamentary activity and policy developments.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

What will make you stand out

  • Experience of working in Parliament, for a political organisation, membership body, NGO or public affairs environment.
  • Knowledge of environmental, fisheries, water, access to nature or rural policy.
  • Understanding of recreational angling, fisheries management or wider environmental and conservation policy.

What’s in it for you

  • Salary of £30,000 – £35,000 per annum pro rata, dependent on experience
  • 24 months fixed term contract, potentially extendable or convertible to permanent role with the right funding framework
  • Remote role with regular travel nationwide (occasional overnight stays, as required)
  • Flexible working across the week – will consider less than FT requests (minimum 30 hours) (some evening or weekend work, as required)
  • Pro-rate of 25 days annual leave (plus public holidays)
  • Laptop and telephone as well as any mileage, expenses, and TOIL

Who we are

The Angling Trust is the national governing body in England representing recreational fishing—one of the country’s largest participation sports. We are a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to protect, promote, and develop our wonderful sport - we care deeply about the environments in which we fish and are committed to creating opportunities for all within society to experience fishing in a healthy aquatic world.

We collaborate with Fish Legal, a separate membership association that uses the law to protect the rights of its members throughout the UK whilst fighting pollution and damage or other threats to the water environment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team dedicated to fighting for the future of fish and fishing.

From standing up for anglers’ rights to campaigning for a healthier environment, we put your interests and those of our beloved sport at the heart of everything we do—salty or fresh, we are championing the protection of our waterways.
