The London Borough of Sutton is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and knowledgeable Biodiversity Officer to join the existing Biodiversity Team.

The Biodiversity Officer will assist with all aspects of delivering biodiversity improvements and nature conservation management throughout the borough, through protection, habitat management, surveying and habitat creation / restoration.

The role requires a combination of practical habitat management knowledge and experience with the ability to review and comment on planning applications, providing a broad range of day-to-day tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Habitat management, including restoration / creation, working with volunteers and contractors
  • Habitat and species surveying and data analysis
  • Assisting with planning consultations and undertaking including site monitoring
  • Public engagement
  • Updating Management Plans and keeping detailed budget records
  • Collaboration and Liaison
  • H&S Compliance

To succeed in this role, you will

  • be a driven and passionate conservationist / ecologist;
  • have at least 3 years’ practical experience of habitat creation and management across a range of habitats;
  • have good identification and surveying skills;
  • have a working knowledge of planning and biodiversity net gain / be willing to learn;
  • have excellent communication skills for dealing with a wide range of people, enthusing them about nature;
  • have the ability to work in partnership with different organisations
  • be highly motivated, independent and organised to work efficiently

Qualifications

  • Ideally, you will have a degree in Biological / Environmental Science, Ecology, or Countryside Management.

Other requirements

  • The role involves regular outdoor practical work on uneven terrain and in varied weather conditions. Reasonable adjustments to support task completion will be considered
  • Full Valid Driving licence (alternative arrangements or adjustments will be considered where possible).
  • Enhanced DBS Check
  • Willingness to work outside of core hours, including morning, evenings and weekends / Bank Holidays.
