Citizen Science Manager
Surrey Wildlife Trust
Citizen Science Manager - Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre
£33,000 to £35,000 pa (dependent on skills and experience)
Are you the unique person we need – a science and data specialist with a natural affinity for working with and inspiring others?
Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) is looking for a strong project manager to implement our Citizen Science Strategy, an individual who can manage complex technical projects whilst calmly involving, engaging, motivating and leading a range of volunteers, citizen science champions and species recorders to generate the datasets which will help us to better understand the biodiversity of Surrey.
Citizen science is identified in Surrey Wildlife Trust’s overall strategy as an important mechanism for meeting the research requirements of the core work of the Trust. It is also crucial for generating robust habitat and species data for Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre (SBIC – the Local Environmental Records Centre for Surrey). SBIC is hosted by SWT and plays an integral role in the delivery of nature recovery throughout the county.
The Citizen Science Manager’s role is to lead the delivery and ongoing development of SWT’s Citizen Science Strategy 2026 – 2033. The Strategy seeks to engage and encourage individuals and communities across Surrey to support our work by collecting high-quality environmental data. Key outcomes include informing conservation decisions (including influencing policy, nature recovery and land management), increasing the coverage of species recording and enhancing the public’s understanding of nature.
Experience managing large projects with multiple stakeholders and data/evidence-based input are essential together with a background of biodiversity, ecology or environmental science. You must be organised in relation to your own time, your own administrative processes and the management of others in a similar way in order to successfully achieve the objectives of this role.
Our offices are in Pirbright and near Leatherhead; our hybrid working policy aims to provide a good work/life balance which can incorporate partial home working whilst having an interesting working environment. The salary offered to successful applicants will form part of a benefits package including: above minimum pension contributions, life assurance of 4 x salary, employee support scheme, 22 days holiday, flexible / hybrid working policy.
The full job profile, including the details of the person specification, and an application form, are available on our website. If you have any questions, please contact Alistair Kirk, the SBIC Strategic Lead at [email protected].
The deadline for applications is midday Wednesday 29th July 2026. Interviews will be held week commencing 10th August 2026. We are recruiting two other roles within the auspices of SBIC, full details are on the website.
We are committed to having an inclusive and diverse workplace and encourage applications from backgrounds which may be underrepresented in our sector, including people from minority ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities. Please let us know if you require any adjustment to make our recruitment process more accessible.
