Modeshift STARS Education Officer (West Sussex)

Salary: £30,000–£36,000 | Full-time (37.5 hours) | 12-month Fixed-Term Contract
Home-based in West Sussex with regular travel across the county

Help shape the future of sustainable travel for thousands of young people.

Do you believe that walking, wheeling, cycling and using public transport can create healthier communities and brighter futures?

Are you passionate about working with schools, building relationships and inspiring positive behaviour change?

If so, we'd love to hear from you.

We're looking for an enthusiastic and engaging Modeshift STARS Education Officer to lead the delivery of an exciting school travel programme across West Sussex, helping schools encourage active, sustainable and healthier journeys.

About Modeshift

Modeshift is a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making sustainable travel the first choice for everyday journeys.

We support organisations across the UK to develop innovative travel plans that encourage people to walk, wheel, ride and use public transport. Through our nationally recognised Modeshift STARS accreditation scheme, we've already supported almost 8,000 accredited organisations, helping millions of people make healthier, safer and more sustainable travel choices.

Our work makes a genuine difference - to people's health, to local communities and to the environment.

About the role

Working from home and across West Sussex, you'll become the key contact for schools, supporting them to develop and deliver effective School Travel Plans and achieve Modeshift STARS accreditation.

You'll work closely with schools, West Sussex County Council and a range of local partners to deliver engaging training, provide expert advice and champion active travel initiatives that reduce congestion, improve air quality and encourage healthier lifestyles.

This is a varied role combining relationship management, training delivery, project coordination, stakeholder engagement and performance reporting.

No two days are the same.

One day you could be delivering an inspiring workshop to school staff, the next supporting an Active Travel initiative in a primary school, presenting progress to key stakeholders or showcasing success stories across social media.

What you'll be doing

You'll:

  • Build relationships with all schools across West Sussex, encouraging engagement with the Modeshift STARS programme.
  • Support schools to develop and deliver School Travel Plans and achieve STARS accreditation.
  • Deliver engaging online webinars, workshops and one-to-one support sessions.
  • Coach and empower school staff to confidently use the Modeshift STARS platform independently.
  • Work alongside West Sussex County Council and delivery partners to deliver behaviour change initiatives that encourage active travel.
  • Coordinate projects such as Active Travel Inspectors across schools.
  • Collect data, monitor programme performance and produce high-quality reports.
  • Share inspiring success stories and case studies through digital channels.
  • Work collaboratively with local authorities, road safety teams, public health professionals and other stakeholders to maximise programme impact.

About you

We're looking for someone who enjoys working with people just as much as delivering projects.

You'll be a confident communicator who can inspire schools, influence stakeholders and build trusted relationships with ease.

You'll also have:

  • Experience working with schools or education settings.
  • Experience delivering engaging training, workshops or educational programmes.
  • Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
  • A passion for behaviour change, sustainability, active travel or public health.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Experience collecting, analysing and presenting performance data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach and the confidence to work remotely.

Experience in sustainable travel, transport planning or behaviour change programmes would be advantageous but isn't essential if you can demonstrate transferable experience and a passion for making a difference.

What we offer

In return you'll receive:

  • Salary of £30,000–£36,000
  • 3% employer pension contribution
  • Home-based working with flexible working hours
  • Full training and ongoing professional development
  • Laptop and mobile phone
  • Modeshift branded clothing for public-facing events
  • Reimbursement of business travel expenses
  • The opportunity to make a genuine environmental and social impact across West Sussex

Location

You'll need to be based in West Sussex and be able to travel regularly to schools, partner organisations and meetings throughout the county.

Occasional travel to our head office in Darlington will also be required.

Ready to make a difference?

If you're passionate about creating healthier communities, reducing congestion, improving air quality and helping the next generation embrace sustainable travel, we'd love to hear from you.

Join Modeshift and help inspire lasting behaviour change - one journey at a time.

Please note closing date is Monday 20th July at 09:00

Interviews will be held in person on 5th and 6th August.
