Help shape the future of active travel in schools across England.

Are you passionate about creating lasting behaviour change?

Do you enjoy developing new ideas, building partnerships and turning successful projects into national programmes?

If you're looking for a role where you can influence how thousands of young people travel, learn and lead, we'd love to hear from you.

We're looking for an ambitious and collaborative ATA Expansion & Legacy Officer to help grow one of England's most exciting active travel programmes. This is a unique opportunity to move beyond programme delivery and play a strategic role in expanding the reach, quality and long-term impact of the Active Travel Ambassadors (ATA) Programme.

About Modeshift

Modeshift is the UK's leading not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving everyday journeys.

We work with schools, businesses, local authorities and communities across the UK to encourage people to walk, wheel, ride and use public transport. Through our nationally recognised Modeshift STARS accreditation schemes, we've helped thousands of organisations create healthier, safer and more sustainable communities.

At Modeshift, we're driven by one simple belief:

Communities are healthier, wealthier and more inviting when people are given the opportunity to choose active and sustainable travel.

About the Active Travel Ambassadors Programme

Delivered in partnership with The Bikeability Trust and funded by Active Travel England, the Active Travel Ambassadors programme empowers secondary school pupils to become leaders within their schools by designing and delivering campaigns that encourage walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

Students develop confidence, leadership and communication skills while helping their schools create healthier travel habits and achieve Modeshift STARS accreditation.

The programme is growing rapidly - and this new role will help shape what comes next.

About the role

This is more than a programme delivery role.

As the ATA Expansion & Legacy Officer, you'll help design the future of the Active Travel Ambassadors programme, ensuring schools continue to thrive long after direct support has ended while identifying new opportunities to expand the programme across England.

Working closely with the ATA Programme Manager and a team of regional Active Travel Ambassadors Coordinators, you'll develop new resources, establish national best practice, strengthen partnerships and ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across every region.

You'll also help create new initiatives that add even more value for schools - including developing recognised student certification, producing engaging resources and creating practical tools that leave a lasting legacy.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys combining strategy with delivery, innovation with collaboration and ideas with action.

What you'll be doing

You'll:

  • Develop and deliver a national Expansion and Legacy Plan for the Active Travel Ambassadors programme.
  • Support schools as they transition towards independently delivering successful ambassador programmes.
  • Work with local authorities and partners to expand the programme into new areas across England.
  • Develop new resources, guidance and innovative initiatives that strengthen and enhance the programme.
  • Create recognised legacy opportunities, including student certification and long-term engagement resources.
  • Capture and share best practice through case studies, events, webinars and national communications.
  • Support the delivery of the Modeshift STARS National Awards and secondary school celebration events.
  • Promote the programme through conferences, stakeholder events, media opportunities and sector engagement.
  • Quality assure Modeshift STARS accreditation submissions.
  • Collect, analyse and report programme data to support continuous improvement and national reporting.

About you

You'll be someone who enjoys improving programmes, bringing people together and creating meaningful change.

You might currently work in education, sustainable transport, behaviour change, youth engagement, project management or community development and be looking for a role where your ideas can have national impact.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience delivering educational programmes, workshops or training.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and partnership-building skills.
  • Experience supporting schools, local authorities or education networks.
  • An understanding of behaviour change and community engagement.
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills.
  • Experience developing resources, guidance or improvement initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience monitoring, evaluating and reporting programme performance.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and the confidence to work independently within a remote team.

Most importantly, you'll be passionate about creating opportunities for young people while helping build healthier, more sustainable communities.

What we offer

In return, you'll receive:

  • Salary of £30,000–£36,000
  • 30 days' annual leave (pro rata) plus bank holidays
  • 3% employer pension contribution
  • Flexible home-based working
  • Comprehensive training and professional development
  • Laptop and mobile phone
  • Modeshift clothing for public-facing events
  • Business travel expenses
  • The opportunity to influence a growing national programme that is changing how young people travel across England

Location

This is a home-based role with travel across England to schools, local authorities, conferences and stakeholder events.

You'll also attend the Modeshift Head Office in Darlington approximately once a month.

Ready to make a national impact?

If you're excited by the opportunity to shape the future of active travel, build lasting partnerships and create a programme that leaves a legacy in schools across the country, we'd love to hear from you.

Join Team Modeshift and help inspire a generation to choose healthier, greener and more sustainable journeys.
