Environmental Issues Journalist / Filmmaker / Mentor

Paint the Change is seeking a talented Journalist/Filmmaker to create compelling reports about environmental issues in east and southeast London, as part of our Cleaner Greener East London campaign, a project dedicated to raising awareness of local environmental challenges and mobilising communities to take action. This post is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.

This is a contractual position for 3-4 days a week, pro rata. The role involves writing and producing videos about local environmental issues in east and southeast London, shooting and editing short documentaries, conducting workshops on basic journalism and filmmaking techniques for young people, and producing impactful social media content. You'll also have the opportunity to mentor young people, supporting them as they develop their own storytelling and filmmaking skills.

This is a hybrid role, but you will need to attend regular meetings at our London office and workshops in east London.

We're looking for storytellers who want to create powerful social change through accessible documentaries, rather than art-film creators. Your portfolio should demonstrate your ability to tell impactful social and political stories that connect with audiences both emotionally and intellectually. Our workshops follow a practical, hands-on approach to filmmaking.

Key Responsibilities

• Shoot high-quality video and record professional audio
• Write and produce reports about environmental issues in east and southeast London
• Manage project timelines
• Stay current with emerging video production techniques
• Contribute creative ideas to project development
• Film and edit short documentaries covering social, political, environmental and historical subjects
• Teach basic journalism and filmmaking skills to young people through workshops across London and the UK, with the opportunity to mentor them further
• Create engaging social media content highlighting our impact
• Produce and edit documentary content focused on Iranian current affairs and Holocaust awareness
• Work with archived and new footage to create compelling narratives
• Support international documentary productions, including projects intended for festival submission
• Ensure high production values that meet broadcast standards

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro
• Strong camera operation and videography skills, including experience with Sony FX3 cameras and gimbals
• Experience recording and editing professional video and audio
• A portfolio demonstrating strong visual storytelling, particularly on social and political subjects
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Understanding of social media content optimisation
• Commitment to social justice issues
• Based in London, UK, with proficiency in written and spoken English
• Willingness to travel locally and internationally when required; a valid passport is necessary

Desirable Skills

• Basic Adobe Photoshop and/or Canva skills
• Experience working with non-profits or social enterprises
• Documentary filmmaking experience
• Experience working in multicultural environments
