Do you want to make a difference in your local community, bringing lots of smiles to children whilst raising awareness about lowering our carbon footprint?

Every half term we hold a ‘Walk to School Day’ for primary schools and a ‘Car Free Friday’ for secondary schools in Harrogate District, with thousands of families taking part, by choosing a lower carbon form of transport that day, such as walking, cycling, scooting, shared/public transport or ‘park and stride’. Two lucky schools get to host it each term with a very special visitor to greet them at the gates, such as Spike the Road Safety Hedgehog from North Yorkshire Council, or Harry Gator from Harrogate Town Football Club.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to lead this campaign, maintain its positive and successful reputation, and continue to increase participation. The time commitment is a minimum of 4 hours per event, with 6 events per year. In reality this is not a solid block of time, but emails/phone calls mostly spread over the 2/3 weeks leading up to an event. It may be necessary to make some of those phone calls during school hours.

Tasks include:

  • Sending bulk email invites/reminders to schools and collating sign ups (currently we use the Google system of Gmail/Google Sheets/Google Forms)
  • Coordinating the event day at two different schools
  • Attending one of the school events each half term if possible (other ZCH volunteers can help with attending the other school location for each event)
  • Communication with the ZCH Transport and Project Groups on successes of the events and opportunities for collaboration/growth of the project

This role will require the volunteer to complete a DBS check through Zero Carbon Harrogate and while lots of the work goes on behind the scenes, we are looking for someone locally located with area knowledge and the ability to attend at least two events in person per academic year.
