River & Wetlands Voluntary Placement (6 Months)
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust
Our mission at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is to create a Yorkshire rich in wildlife for the benefit of everyone – more wildlife, more wild places and more people having a strong connection to nature. We have an amazing opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated volunteer to join us on a new six-month placement which combines bespoke training in the conservation and restoration of rivers and wetlands with valuable practical hands-on experience.
This Voluntary Placement would be ideal for an individual who is keen to build a career in conservation.
Available for up to 6 months, with a flexible time commitment of 2 or 3 days a week (Monday to Friday), on this Voluntary Placement you will gain valuable experience working on river restoration and wetland creation projects in North Yorkshire, and will have the opportunity to gain relevant accredited training.
You will be based in our York office with field work largely carried out near Northallerton, Whitby and York. You'll assist our Project Officers with work on third party land, and there will be plenty of opportunities to work with the wider team here at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) to enhance your development and build your knowledge.
You'll have the opportunity to gain experience in the following areas:
- Riparian ecology and restoration
- Land management techniques to improve water quality
- Wetland habitat creation
- Riparian surveys to identify sedimentation issues and other Water Framework Directive failures
- Assist in overseeing contractors undertaking practical conservation work (familiarisation with contracts etc.)
- Undertaking practical tasks such as tree planting, surveys, pond work & habitat creation
- Gain familiarisation with budgets and project management tools
- Mapping and GIS work using QGIS
- Publicising project work via traditional communications and social media
- Coordinating volunteers for survey work and events
- Engaging with farmers, landowners and other stakeholders
