Species Protection Volunteer Winter Warden, progressing to Spring/Summer Beach Warden

We need your help protecting vulnerable species of wading and beach-nesting birds on the Dee Estuary. These birds, including Little Terns, Oystercatchers and Curlew, are finding it harder than ever to find safe places to roost in the winter and raise their families in the spring. This is due to a rise in visitors to coastal places, loss of habitat, increased threats from predators, and climate change.

You have the chance to be part of a dedicated group of RSPB staff and volunteers, carrying out vital conservation work to help protect these vulnerable species at Point of Ayr.

We have had lots of success protecting these birds in recent years, but they are becoming more vulnerable, due to increased threats from predators. So, we need your help more than ever!

The Role

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help warden the beach at Point of Ayr. You will also be working closely with our existing team of experienced volunteers and RSPB staff.

We are looking for Winter Wardens to cover weekend shifts from September 2025 – March 2026. These shifts are only on high tide weekends for a few hours.

You can commit to as much or as little time as you are able to, we can be flexible around your other commitments. Even a couple of hours over a weekend will be extremely helpful.

If you enjoy the Winter Warden role, there are opportunities to continue volunteering over the summer as a Beach Warden.

Travel will be required to site. A proportion of travel expenses can be reimbursed.

What will you be doing?

• Protecting important high-tide winter roost sites by patrolling the Point of Ayr site and preventing disturbance to the birds.
• Engaging with beach users and residents in the local communities about the threats these birds face and what everyone can do to protect them.
• Practical activities including fencing work and equipment maintenance.
• If you continue the role into the spring and summer, you will be protecting Little Tern nesting sites during the breeding season.

Full training will be provided on all aspects of the role.

What skills/experience do you need?

• You will need to be able to undertake regular shifts which will be booked via a team rota. This may require walking long distances, often along a beach. You should also be comfortable being outdoors in all weather conditions.
• An enthusiasm for coastal wildlife would be beneficial, but full training will be given. This will allow you to talk knowledgably to beach users about the birds and conservation work.
• Confident in talking to members of the public about the threats these birds face and what everyone can do to protect them.
• Willingness to learn and assist with the various activities that the RSPB undertakes to protect beach-nesting birds.
• Flexibility to volunteer during weekends in the winter months (whilst fitting in with your availability). If you choose to continue in this role into the summer, there will be weekday shifts available too.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a small team.
• Locations are remote so access to own transport is desirable. Public transport or cycling may be options depending on your location.

Y Rôl

Rydyn ni’n chwilio am wirfoddolwyr ymroddedig i helpu warden y traeth yn y Parlwr Du. Byddwch hefyd yn gweithio'n agos gyda'n tîm presennol o wirfoddolwyr profiadol a staff yr RSPB. Rydyn ni’n chwilio am Wardeniaid y Gaeaf i weithio shifftiau penwythnos o fis Medi 2025 hyd at fis Mawrth 2026. Dim ond ar benwythnosau llanw uchel am ychydig oriau y mae'r shifftiau hyn. Gallwch ymrwymo i gymaint neu gyn lleied o amser ag y gallwch, gallwn fod yn hyblyg o amgylch eich ymrwymiadau eraill. Bydd hyd yn oed awr neu ddwy dros benwythnos yn help mawr. Os ydych chi'n mwynhau rôl Warden y Gaeaf, mae cyfleoedd i barhau i wirfoddoli dros yr haf fel Warden y Traeth. Bydd angen teithio i'r safle. Gellir ad-dalu cyfran o gostau teithio.

Beth fyddwch chi'n ei wneud?

• Gwarchod safleoedd clwydo pwysig ar lanw uchel yn y gaeaf drwy gadw golwg ar safle’r Parlwr Du ac atal unrhyw aflonyddu ar yr adar.
• Ymgysylltu â defnyddwyr y traeth a thrigolion yn y cymunedau lleol am y bygythiadau y mae'r adar hyn yn eu hwynebu a'r hyn y gall pawb ei wneud i'w gwarchod.
• Gweithgareddau ymarferol gan gynnwys gwaith ffensio a chynnal a chadw offer.
• Os byddwch chi'n parhau i weithio yn y gwanwyn a'r haf, byddwch chi'n gwarchod safleoedd nythu Môr-wenoliaid Bach yn ystod y tymor bridio.
