Environment Trustee
Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust
Love nature and want to make a difference locally? We’re looking for someone to help lead our environmental work as we restore the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals.
About us
We are restoring the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals — once-derelict waterways — to create a vibrant green and blue corridor that benefits people, wildlife, and the wider environment.
Our work has many benefits:
- For local communities the restored (and semi-restored) canal offers a peaceful, accessible space for walking, cycling, volunteering, and connecting with nature. It enhances wellbeing, encourages active lifestyles, and fosters pride in local heritage.
- For wildlife the canal provides a vital habitat and migration route, supporting biodiversity and contributing to regional conservation efforts.
- For visitors and tourists it offers a unique experience rooted in history, ecology, and community spirit — boosting the local economy and raising the profile of Lichfield and surrounding areas.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll help us protect wildlife, shape green spaces, and make sure our restoration projects support a healthier, more sustainable future. Whether you’ve got professional experience or just a passion for the environment, your input will help guide our plans and keep nature at the heart of what we do.
You’ll help guide our environmental work as we restore the canal corridor — making sure nature is protected, green spaces are enhanced, and sustainability is built into everything we do.
This could include:
- Shaping our biodiversity and nature recovery plans
- Advising on habitat creation and wildlife protection
- Supporting environmental compliance and good practice
- Bringing an environmental lens to board discussions and decisions
You’ll be joining a friendly board of trustees who care deeply about heritage, community, and the environment — and you’ll have plenty of support along the way.
The skills you need
You don’t need to be an expert — just someone who cares about the environment and wants to make a difference. We’d love to hear from you if you have:
- Knowledge or interest in nature, biodiversity, or sustainability
- Confidence to ask questions and share ideas
- Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
- Experience with environmental projects or policy (helpful, but not essential)
Whether you bring professional expertise or lived experience, your perspective matters. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
Time commitment
We’re flexible — most trustees give a few hours a week, including monthly board meetings (held in the evening). You might spend a little more time when reviewing plans or supporting specific projects, but we’ll work around your availability.
Location
Trustees should live within 12 miles of Lichfield. Admin tasks can be carried out at home, but regular site visits and attendance at board meetings are expected to stay connected to our restoration work and meet other volunteers.
