Job purpose
The St Kilda Club was established over 50 years ago to help conserve and protect the islands of St Kilda, and over the years, has helped fund a variety of projects through the National Trust for Scotland, donating over £250,000 in the last 10 years. One of the major components of this success has been the St Kilda Club shop located on St Kilda. The shop is visited each summer by approximately 5,000 visitors who arrive on cruise ships, day boats and yachts.
The St Kilda Club is seeking a practical and enthusiastic retail manager to manage the shop remotely from home, with a period of approximately two weeks a year spent on St Kilda in April/May to set up the shop for the season alongside NTS staff.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Responsible for day-to-day financial administration within the retail operation, including cash/till reconciliation, day-end and week-end reports and reconciliation and completion of the banking processes. Complete accounting records for the shop, liaising with the Treasurer of the St Kilda Club.
- Liaising with pre-determined suppliers to order stock, maintain adequate stock levels within budgetary controls and arrange delivery of stock to Island.
- Analyse product performance and make appropriate recommendations at end of season range reviews.
- Ensure stock file is up to date and accurate by becoming a systems expert on shop Epos now system.
- Ensure that all products are correctly priced and displayed according to St Kilda Club Shop Board retail standards.
- Responsible for end of year stock take.
- Responsible for Reunion shop in Edinburgh each year, namely arranging delivery of stock to and from Edinburgh, setting up pop-up shop, organising internal volunteer helpers to run shop on reunion day.
- Liaise with the designer of the St Kilda calendar and ordering of appropriate stock to fulfil all requirements.
- From time to time, may be asked to help with St Kilda Club on line shop.
Dimensions and scope of job
- Attend meetings (held 3 times a year) and provide a retail financial performance report at each meeting.
- Attend the St Kilda Club reunion held in November each year.
- Provide key stakeholder engagement with the National Trust for Scotland representatives, St Kilda Club shop Board, St Kilda Club and local stakeholders.
- The shop is currently located in a fully retail kitted shipping container, fixtures and fittings to be continually monitored to ensure high merchandising standards are always achieved and defects communicated, and resolutions achieved through stakeholder engagement.
Experience
- Significant previous experience of working in a busy retail environment.
- Excellent organisational, administrative and time-management skills with the ability to prioritise and re-prioritise workload to meet changing demands.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office products.
- Current driving licence valid for driving in the UK.
- Self-reliant with the ability to think and act quickly when confronted with emergencies.
- Ability to use a variety of IT systems, Epos Now, Teams, Zoom, Sharepoint.
- A genuine understanding of, and belief in, the work of the St Kilda Club and the National Trust for Scotland and knowledge of St Kilda.
- Environmentally aware and willing to be an advocate for conservation.
- Ability to be away from home for a period of time to volunteer on St Kilda at the start of the season.
- Physically mobile and able to undertake some physical work.
