Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research programmes across 10 countries worldwide.

We are currently recruiting for a herpetofauna scientist to work at our UK site based at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex. Positions will ideally be for 7 consecutive weeks between 22nd June and 9th August. You can find more information on our website. If you are interested but can’t commit to the full-time period, please still get in touch.

The position will involve carrying out reptile refugia surveys and newt bottle trapping with torching as part of a large-scale monitoring programme across the rewilding site. Applicants should have experience working in the field, a biological undergraduate degree level or higher, and extensive survey experience as well as a GCN licence.

In return, successful applicants receive full accommodation and food on-site, potential current and future research opportunities, networking and skills development, and, of course, the opportunity to contribute towards long-term conservation efforts.

The position will be filled when we find a suitable candidate, so if you are interested, please apply as soon as you can to give yourself the best chance. The position involves working with minors, so if successful, you will be asked to complete a background check.

About Operation Wallacea Ltd

Operation Wallacea (Opwall) began working within the Wallacea region of Indonesia in 1995. Initially funded to run a rapid assessment of this poorly-explored area, we soon discovered that the need for long term monitoring data in many ecosystems was critical. Nearly 30 years on, we now run biodiversity research expeditions all over the world, sourcing data that has underpinned hundreds of research papers and informed high-level environmental policy decisions in the sites we work in. We also offer biodiversity and conservation field training courses in the UK as well as online training courses using data collected on our expeditions.
