Biodiversity Coordinator - North Buton, Indonesia

Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research programmes across nine countries worldwide.

We are currently recruiting for a Biodiversity Coordinator to work at our terrestrial Indonesia site based in the lowland tropical rainforests of Buton Island, South-east Sulawesi. This is a unique opportunity to be involved with fieldwork in an endemic-rich and extremely poorly-studied part of the tropics. Positions will be for seven consecutive weeks between 8th June and 27th July.

The role will involve coordinating and supervising the correct conduct of various biodiversity monitoring surveys taking place throughout the season, and be the point of contact for the lead scientists on each survey. It will be your responsibility to ensure high quality data collection which fits with Opwall’s goals for the season and to look for future improvement and growth. The scope of surveys includes birds, herpetofauna, butterflies, bats, large mammals (Anoa, pigs, primates), as well as undertaking vegetation plots. Most survey methods are conducted along a series of 1,200m transects within both primary and secondary rainforest habitats.

You will be working very closely with the site manager; therefore, good communication and organisational skills are important. You will also be required to deliver a presentation summarising the season at our partner university in Kendari at the end of the season.

Additionally, the position will involve learning and delivering a prepared conservation lecture series to university and school students, assisting incoming groups in survey methodologies, designing and facilitating student workshops, presentations and other interactive learning tasks. Applicants should have an M.Sc. or higher in ecology, conservation or related area and field experience.
