St Nicks
Our Volunteer Park Ranger role is the perfect opportunity to gain the experience needed to start a career in nature conservation. Join the team at St Nicks, “The green heart of York”, as a Volunteer Park Ranger and gain hands-on experience managing a vibrant Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
We are seeking two enthusiastic, motivated individuals for a 6-month placement helping to care for our 24-acre nature reserve; a former landfill site, now home to a rich mosaic of habitats and over 2,400 species. Depending on availability, there may also be opportunities to work on other green spaces across York.
About the role
With ‘on the job’ training and support, our two rangers will work together to play a key role in the day-to-day management of our unique and diverse nature reserve. Ranger responsibilities include:
- Carrying out conservation activities such as wildflower planting, scything, tree planting and invasive species control
- Supporting and leading diverse volunteer groups
- Wildlife surveying and habitat monitoring
- Improving access, maintaining paths, steps, benches etc,
- Engaging with visitors
- Assisting with events and community activities
What you’ll gain
You’ll work alongside our experienced LNR team who will deliver in-house training in practical conservation skills, maintenance tasks, and species surveying. Formal first aid training will also be provided for successful candidates. Ongoing supervision will ensure your personal development and help you work towards your long-term goals in the field.
About you
This role is ideal for anyone keen to move into conservation. Some experience in practical work and leading groups is helpful but not essential — we’re looking for friendly, approachable individuals who communicate well with people from all backgrounds, enjoy working outdoors in all weather, and are eager to learn and get involved.
Commitment
Minimum 2 days per week (Tuesdays & Wednesdays), with additional opportunities depending on availability.
