The National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our vital image‑analysis team. This behind‑the‑scenes role plays a crucial part in the conservation pipeline: by helping us convert camera‑trap images into accurate population density data, you’ll be directly supporting strategies that guide where and how hedgehog recovery efforts take place.

Sadly, hedgehogs are declining across the country. The NHMP is a pioneering project that has been set up by People's Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, in partnership with Nottingham Trent University, Zoological Society of London, London Hogwatch, MammalWeb and Durham University, to give us vital data on hedgehogs and other mammals that will help their recovery. Each year, our cameras take thousands of photos across the country and we’re looking for committed volunteers to help analyse them. The images with hedgehogs have already been identified, but we now need to annotate them to extract key parameters for the analysis. You'll assist with this by marking the positions of animals in the images, to build tracks through the image sequences. These tracks are used to estimate their speed and ultimately their population densities.

This is a flexible, self-managed remote role, and you will receive full training. Plus you'll be contributing to a cutting-edge project that will support the recovery of much-loved species.

About People's Trust for Endangered Species

People’s Trust for Endangered Species was set up in 1977 to save our wildlife. We are governed by a board of volunteer trustees and our team of staff are passionate about protecting endangered species and places. We’ve been standing up for wildlife for over 40 years. With the help of scientists, conservationists, landowners, and the general public, we’re working to protect our delicately balanced ecosystem by bringing our most threatened species back from the brink.
