Rivers, Water & HydrologyConservation & Wildlife

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to protecting, restoring, and improving the rivers and lakes of West Cumbria for the benefit of wildlife and the people living and working around them. Our dedicated and passionate team work hard all year round partnering with landowners, farmers, organisations, local businesses, schools, and communities to deliver for rivers and inspire a love for and understanding of our waterways.

Role:

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience working within the environmental sector, particularly for experience in fisheries monitoring and research. The work will be primarily focused on helping to conduct the annual fish and habitat surveys across our catchment using electrofishing techniques but there may also be opportunities to get involved with:

  • Assisting our Invasive Species Project Officer with invasive species surveys, control, and awareness raising;
  • Helping at events such as volunteering days;
  • Shadowing Project Officers to learn about all the aspects of our work;
  • Some admin and comms work to get a well-rounded experience.

The successful candidate will be given the relevant training when required and have the opportunity for self-development in the role.

Requirements:

You will be passionate about a career in conservation and a self-starter who is able to demonstrate a committed, mature and flexible approach to your work. You will have excellent organisational and communication skills, being able to work equally well on your own or as part of a team. You will be reliable and self-motivated.

You will be confident working in the outdoor environment and the Cumbrian weather which can be four seasons in one day on occasions!

Other info:

You will be part of a friendly and committed team based in Keswick, Cumbria, initially reporting to the Trust’s Volunteer Coordinator and supported by WCRT’s staff and trustees.

If you believe that you have the passion, commitment and skills to take this exciting opportunity forward then we would like to hear from you.

Closing date for applications is at 9am on Monday 1st June 2026. Interviews will be held at our offices in Keswick on Wednesday 17th June 2026.
