Species Protection (Beach Ranger - Plovers in Peril)

Why we need you

We need your help protecting vulnerable beach nesting birds which nest on the sand and shingle beaches between Snettisham and Heacham in Norfolk.

Iconic beach nesting birds like the Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher have rapidly declined in Norfolk in recent years. A rise in visitors to coastal places, loss of habitat and climate change has made it harder than ever for these birds to find safe places to nest and raise their families on the Norfolk coast.

In 2021, the RSPB launched a project called Plovers in Peril, which hopes to reverse the declines we’ve been seeing close to home, on a stretch of beach between Snettisham and Heacham. Working in partnership with Wild Ken Hill, the project provides much needed protection for these birds during the vulnerable nesting season by installing seasonal fencing and signage, providing information and advice to beach users, and working with local communities to raise awareness and inspire positive action. The project has received vital funding from the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk via the Habitats Monitoring and Mitigation fund which will enable this vital work.

Our volunteer beach rangers are at the heart of this vital project, engaging with beach users throughout nesting season when these birds are at their most vulnerable, with fragile eggs and tiny chicks to protect. As visitor numbers rise on our coasts and climate change presents ongoing challenges, they need our support more than ever to ensure they have a safe space to breed and successfully raise their young.

What will I be doing?

• You will be a friendly face on the beach, chatting with beach users, providing information, and nurturing support for beach nesting birds.
• You will champion beach nesting birds by encouraging wildlife friendly beach use, helping to reduce disturbance to nests throughout the season and building support within the local community.
• You will be our eyes and ears, sharing observations to help us monitor their progress and perhaps occasionally assisting with site tasks (optional).
• You will help us to gather data that will deepen our understanding of the needs of both people and wildlife at this important site, to ensure both can continue to share this special place for years to come.

What skills will I need?

This role will require some key general skills, but a full induction, training and on-going support will be provided. We would love to hear from you if:

• You have an infectious enthusiasm for nature and the ability to communicate efficiently with people from all walks of life, with differing knowledge and interest.
• You are approachable, an active listener and you take a calm and curious approach to addressing opposing viewpoints if they arise - your feathers aren’t easily ruffled!
• You are happy to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Bird identification and monitoring skills are NOT essential as full training will be provided but an interest in nature, good observation skills and a keenness to learn is important.
• You are happy to record information using simple forms (training is provided).
• You are happy to work alone or as a pair (with support from staff and fellow volunteers).

• The role will involve some walking on shingle terrain and in all weathers - a great way to boost wellbeing and fitness.

This role can at times be a challenging one where the threats facing beach nesting birds can be hard-hitting, but we know from volunteers sharing their experiences that being part of the change these birds need can also be incredibly rewarding, and this role offers the opportunity to make a real impact for nature and the environment from within a supportive team.

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of the RSPB’s work on species recovery. As a beach ranger volunteer, you will be helping to establish and protect a healthy and thriving population of beach-nesting birds on the North Norfolk coast.
